PENN YAN, NY | Carole B. Savercool, age 86, of 132 Main St.,
Penn Yan, NY, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002.
Friends may call at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Saturday,
Sept. 7, 2002 from 12 noon to 2 pm. Service will follow at 2
pm with the Rev. Aileen Robbins, officiating.
She was born in Brooklyn, NY on Sept. 21, 1915, and was the
daughter of Matthew Lewis Blair, Jr. and Laura Robinson Blair.
Carole worked as a secretary for several companies over the
years, most notably for Columbia Artists Management in New
York City. She retired in 1984 after 20 years at Corning
Community College in Corning, NY, where she had been the
secretary for the Dean of Faculty and later the secretary for
the Social Sciences Division. After a short stint at
retirement, she went back to work part-time for the college's
Nursing Division for a few more years before deciding to
retire for good in 1994.
While Carole's occupation may have been as a secretary, her
vocation was as a pianist. She was very accomplished and
played for Mascana Opera Company in New York City for many
years. She also was a guest soloist with the New Paltz
Symphony playing the Mozart Piano Concerto #23.
In her high school years at Ramsey High School in Ramsey, NJ,
she was the official pianist for all graduations until her own
in 1934. She also taught piano, music and crafts as part of a
WPA project during the depression.
She was founder of the Elmira/Corning Chapter of Parents
Without Partners (PWP) and was quite active in the
organization for many years. She was a member of the Elmira
Civic Chorus, which later became the Elmira Symphony and
Choral Society and several times sang in concerts with either
one or both of her children. She was a former member of St.
Matthew's Episcopal Church in Horseheads, Grace Episcopal
Church in Elmira, and Christ Episcopal Church in Corning and
was active in the choir at all three. Recently, she would
occasionally attend services at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Cecile (Mark) Carpenter of
Penn Yan; her son, Blair (Mary) Savercool of Pennsauken, NJ;
grandchildren, Gregory Redder, Kathrine, Jessica, Alicia,
Leilani, Karin and Stephanie Savercool; sister, Joan B. Martin
of Waldwick, NJ; also 8 nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas A. Blair (her
twin) and Matthew Lewis Blair III, her brother-in-law Eugene
B. Martin, her sister-in-law Virginia Blair and her niece Mary
J. Martin.
