Former Anchorage resident Terry Lee Schank Sr., 62, died Dec. 10, 2004, in Healdsburg, Calif.
At his request, no services will be held. A private memorial will be in the spring, at which time his ashes will be scattered over Mount McKinley.
Mr. Schank was born Nov. 6, 1942, in Scottsbluff, Neb. He attended schools in Kansas, California and, beginning in 1954, Alaska.
He attended Woodland Park Elementary and Central Junior High schools. He then attended West High School until his senior year, when he moved to Fontana, Calif.. He graduated from Fontana High School at the age of 16. He attended Chafey Junior College in California.
A third-generation sheet-metal worker, he returned to Anchorage in 1962 to continue his apprenticeship and became a master craftsman. With his friend Larry Snipes he opened the first nightclub for teenagers in Anchorage in 1963, The Cinnamon Cinder. He remained here until 1966.
He worked on the North Slope from 1979 to 1980 before returning to California.
His family wrote: "He had a lifelong passion for all things mechanical, especially cars and airplanes. He soloed while still in high school and never lost his love of flying. Terry was an avid builder of model planes and any car that could be raced. His innovations on hot rods and racing cars were recognized by Hot Rod magazine. He built and donated the pan for the Guinness Book record pumpkin pie in Windsor, Calif."
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Terry Jr. and Janice Schank, Kenneth Schank, Scott and Pam Grenninger, and Jackie and Ray Crawford; parents, Kenneth and Leona Schank; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sally Sprague, Suzan and Gary Matthews, and Peggy and Joseph Kalamarides; brother and sister-in-law, Rocky and Christina Schank; grandchildren, Catherine, JorDan, Davis, Cole, Nathan, Loren, BaileyAnne and Caitlyn; companion, Karen Fuller; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorris Schank; uncle, Clifford Schank; and nephew, Charles Thiele.
