Mr. Roth "Bob" Heckman
Roth Heckman, "Bob", of Conway Drive, Middletown and formerly of Reading and Philadelphia died Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Select Specialty Hospital of Harrisburg. Roth marked his 85th birthday on Monday, September 12.
He was born in 1926 in West Reading. He was a 1944 graduate of West Reading High School and attended Temple University. He served two enlistments in the US Army, serving in Europe with the 106th Infantry Division during World War II and with the 318th Heavy Tank Battalion during the Korean War.
He was a civilian employee of the US Air Force in Reading, Philadelphia, Marietta, and the former Olmsted Air Force Base, Middletown. During this time, while assigned to the Air Force Logistics Liaison Office, he traveled to and worked in every European country on our side of the Iron Curtain in resolution of Air Force logistical problems. Also during this time, he assisted in establishing Air Force logistic policy involving the Cuban Missile Crisis and the crisis that developed during the communist buildup of the Berlin Wall. He retired in 1982 as a logistician from the US Army Security Assistance Center at the New Cumberland Army Depot to raise his son. He was the former owner of Flag Picture Framers. He was a member of Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Veterans of the 106th Infantry Division, VFW Post 7415, New Cumberland, American Legion Post 594, Middletown, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz. He was an avid woodworker, designing and constructing furniture. He was also a jazz aficionado, beginning with the Big Bands of the 1930s to present day. He attended many jazz festivals throughout the country.
He is survived by his daughter, Carol Leddy of Sinking Spring, and two sons, David Heckman of Temple, and John Heckman at home. He is also survived by his grandchildren Caroline and Christopher Leddy, and Anthony Heckman.
He was preceded in death by his mother Cleora Heckman, his wife Mildred Bosnjak Heckman, and his grandson Chad Leddy.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Life Celebration Graveside Service with Military Honors at 2pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. There will be no viewing.
