Zena Ahlum, 87, of Quakertown, previously of Haycock Township, died Monday, Feb. 21, in the Belle Haven Nursing Home, Quakertown. She was the wife of Daniel Ahlum.
She was principal of Richard E. Strayer Junior High School, and served the Quakertown School District for 41 years until retiring in 1975.
She began her career at Quakertown as a business education teacher in 1934. After nine years, she was promoted to assistant principal for what was then the junior-senior high school, where she served from 1943 to 1956. She became principal of the new junior high school in 1956.
A graduate of Drexel University, she received a master's degree in education and administration from Lehigh University, Bethlehem.
Born in Meridan, Conn., she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Nadine Platoff.
Survivor: Husband.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Jeffrey A. Naugle Funeral Home, 20 N. Ambler St., Quakertown. Call 10-11 a.m. Thursday.

Joyce B. Gabica, beloved Sister, Mother and Grandmother passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010 of natural causes at the age of 80. Joyce was born June 21, 1930 in Boise, Idaho to Juanita and William Wardle. She led a life of love, compassion and caring for others. Through her high school years Joyce was very involved with the Job's Daughters, Bethel #13. She graduated from Boise High school in 1948 and has been active in all of the class reunions and activities. She graduated from Boise Junior College in 1950 with an Associate's Degree. Joyce's entire working career was spent on the corner of 13th and Idaho. She worked for several years for Idaho Creamery and after graduating college moved across the street to work for Idaho Power until her retirement in 1985. While working at Idaho Creamery, Joyce met the love of her life, Augustine "Gus" Gabica. The two were married November 8, 1952. They were blessed with three children and were happily married until Gus's death in 1987. Joyce loved camping and fishing. She loved spending time at her cabin in Cascade and truly loved being outdoors and sharing these experiences with her family. Joyce enjoyed collecting antiques and auctions. She could spend many hours waiting to bid on that special item. She also had a great love for animals. Joyce was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She loved her grandchildren dearly and supported them in all their sports, animals, and adventures. Words cannot express how greatly she will be missed. Survivors include children, William Gabica and his wife Genette of Bayview, Idaho, Robert Gabica of Meridian, Idaho, and Christena Cook and her husband Kelly of Baker City, Oregon; grandchildren, Bridger and Augustena Cook of Baker City, Oregon; brother, William Wardle and his wife Barbara of Tucson, Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Augustine "Gus" Gabica, and her mother and father, Juanita and William Wardle. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Mom's personal caregiver Mindy Gray. She became a true friend of Joyce's and is considered a family member by Bill, Bob and Tena. A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, September 10, 2010 from 4pm to 8pm at Alden-Waggoner Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 11, in the Alden-Waggoner Chapel. A time of remembrance will be held immediately after. Burial will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery. William Wardle, 74, of Pinellas Park, Florida passed peacefully at home on April 5th, 2011. Beloved husband of 27 years to Mary Wardle. Loving father of Jenny White, Katie Mundon, Bill Wardle and Betsy Zuk. Loving step-father of David Smith, Mark Smith, Brian Smith, Terry Smith and Megan Smith and to the late Kenny Smith and Murray Smith. Loving grandfather of Zach Conners, Alex Conners, Ryan Mundon, Emily Mundon, Noah Wardle, Joshua Wardle, Logan Zuk, Collin Zuk, Jordan Smith, Marina Smith, Kyla Smith, Liam Keady and Sara Keady. Greatgrandfather to Brooklyn Smith. A loving family man William leaves the world a much better place through the love he shared and passed on to future generations.
