3 Clell G. (Richard) Toulou, age 85, a long-time resident of Inchelium, WA passed away on July 13, 2009 in Spokane, WA. Clell was born on October 19, 1923 in Miles, WA the son of Clarence C. and Mary Alice (Butler) Toulou.,
Clell began his life by traveling to St. Aloysius Church for baptism, with his family, on the day of his birth. He attended several grade schools beginning in Kewa, WA then later transferring to St. Mary’s School in Omak followed by the Missions education program in Idaho. He began high school in Inchelium and left in the beginning of his senior year to help support the family by working the family ranch. Clell also assisted at neighboring ranches as a ranch hand. Clell’s work ethic seemed tireless as his ranch gradually grew through the purchase of Tribal allotments purchased from family. At one time, he was raising nearly 300 head of cattle. Clell had married Donna Farber on Oct. 19, 1954. Together they ranched and raised their two daughters. Their marriage ended in 1985, but Clell continued to make sure that her needs were met. Clell shared his later years with long-time friend and band member, Maxine Bach. Clell later passed on the operations of the ranch to his daughters Luanne and husband Chuck, Marilee and husband Albert.
Clell lead by example with high ideals and a quiet perseverance. He was a strong proponent of education and believed that learning happens in the classroom. Clell loved music and was an accomplished fiddle player, playing at several community venues with his band. He taught many of his grandchildren how to play and shared his music to all who would listen. Clell was also a hunter, fisherman, founder of the Inchelium Rodeo (riding saddle broncos and roping calves), Charter member of the 4-H program, Inchelium School Board member, and a member of the Elks and Eagles Lodge, South Ferry County Cattlemen’s Association, Washington State Cattleman Association, National Cattleman’s Association, and the National Rifle Association.
Recognized for his achievements as Cattleman of the Year in 1964. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elsie Auberton and a baby brother, Lester Charles Toulou.
Clell is survived by his daughters, Luanne Finley and husband, Chuck of Inchelium, WA, Marilee Seymour and husband, Albert of Inchelium, WA; brothers, Charles Toulou and wife, Gertrude of Coulee Dam, WA, Alvin Toulou of Inchelium, WA, Violet Assing and friend, Ron Chapple of Spokane, WA, Gen Robertson and husband, Bob of Spokane Valley, WA, Eleanor Kinder and husband, Gene of Colville, WA; grandchildren, Lejon, Casey, Tanna and Brian Finley, Scotty, Melanie, Audrey, and Cole Seymour; 12 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. .
