The disease especially manifested itself in the past six months.

Carol trusted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior when she was in her late teens and loved and served Him ever since. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and a devoted friend to many.

Carol was graduated from Chesterton High School, Chesterton, IN in 1961 and then attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL.

Carol married Gene Follis August 10, 1963, in Chesterton, IN and they enjoyed 53 years together. Carol was so very supportive of Gene, as he pastored four churches in various parts of the country; ministering along his side in visitation, Bible studies, and Sunday school teaching.

A homemaker for much of her life, she worked in banking in later years before her retirement in 2004. She loved flower gardening and handiwork, gracing their home with many of her beautiful treasures.

Carol will be remembered for her ready smile, gracious and encouraging spirit, and helping hand.

Carol is survived by her husband, Gene, three children, Todd (Kelly) Follis of Stillwater, MN, Heather (Jay) Jerdee of Rochester, MN, Stacy (Kyle) Wiens of Menomonie, WI; eight grandchildren: Sayer, Sheridan, Sterling, and Sonya Follis, Keegan and Aidan Jerdee, Katarina and Annaka Wiens; brother, John Carpenter, of South Bend, IN, sister-in-law Karolyn Carpenter of South Bend, IN, brother-in-law, Roane (Judy) Follis of Valparaiso, IN; and nieces and nephews.

Carol was preceded in death by her father and mother, Ralph and Ramona Carpenter, a brother, James Carpenter, and a little sister, Janice Carpenter, who died at age eight.

The memorial service for Carol Follis will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 29, at Menomonie Alliance Church in Menomonie, WI, with Gene Follis, Carol’s husband, officiating. Visitation will precede the service at 10 a.m. and following the service a lunch will be served at the church.

Jim was born on July 5, 1947 in Gary, Indiana to Ralph and Ramona Carpenter.

He is survived by brother John Carpenter of South Bend, Indiana, sister Carol (Gene) Follis of Menomonie, Wisconsin, and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Jim was preceded in death by parents, Ralph and Ramona Carpenter and little sister, Janice Carpenter.

James graduated from Chesterton High School, lived in Chesterton for a time, and then moved to San Francisco, where he lived for over 30 years.

Jim (called "Ros" by friends in San Francisco) was blessed with a beautiful and powerful tenor voice, which he used to sing solos and also in chorale performances, including singing in the San Francisco Symphony Chorus.

Jim was dearly loved by family and friends and is sorely missed.

A family graveside memorial at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, Indiana, on the lot where his parents and sister, Janice, are buried, will be held later this month.

Joseph Vernon Beckham, 63, of Portage, died Saturday, June 18, at Porter Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 20, 1925 in Gary, a son of John and Veronica (Belllot) Beckham. Mr. Beckham retired after 26 years of employment with Gary Sheet and Tin, and was formerly employed by EJ&E Railroad and Canada Dry Distributoers.

Mr. Beckham was past group leader of Cub Scout Pack 150 and past volunteer worker with the Scouts, past member of the Democratic Club of Portage, past assistant Democratic precinct committeeman, past president of Jones Elementary School PTA and past grievance committeeman for United Steelworkers of Americ Local 1066. He was a member of VFW Post 2511 of Porter, USS Kidd Association, Destroyer Squadron 48, National Rifle Association and Friendly Sons of Erin.

On Feb. 18, 1952, he married Delores Haigh, who survives.

Also surviving are six sons, Joseph of Texas, Jeffrey of Montana, John of Georgia, James of Texas, Jerome of Colorado and Jay of Portage; four daughters, Vickie Burke of DeMotte, Kathryn Benson and Michelle Beausoleil, both of Montana, and Theresa France of Florida; a sister, Patricia Kelly of Portage; a brother, Jerry Mackley of California; 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services 9:15 a.m. Thursday at Burnes Funeral Home, Hobart, and 10 a.m. at Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church, where he was a member; the Rev. Joseph Ivans officiating; cremation; visitation 6 to 9 p.m. today, with Knights of Columbus St. Clement Council 3283 services at 7:30 p.m. , and 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with wake services at 7:30 p.m.
