SOUTH CAIRO Lauren A. Steinberg, 78, of South Cairo died Tuesday in Columbia-Greene Memorial Hospital's St. Peter's Hudson Valley Hospice unit.

Mr. Steinberg was born in Groton, Tompkins County. He attended the Rochester Business Institute.

He was employed by the state Department of Correctional Services in Coxsackie achieving the rank of lieutenant prior to his retirement in 1970. He then became a sales representative for Amos Post Inc. in Catskill until 1982.

Mr. Steinberg enlisted in the Army, where he served as corporal in the 467th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Forces during World War II, earning the American Campaign Medal .
