The daughter of the late Hamilton and Clara (Fischer) Pennell passed away Sunday evening, October 28, 2007 at 8:05 pm at Bay Regional Medical Center, age 77 years. She was born April 16, 1930 in Bay City and has resided here all of her life. Mrs. Doan was a life member of Christian Assembly Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and served on the Church Decorating Committee. She retired from the Bay City School System as a Educational Secretary, was the past President of the Secretary and Clerical Association and the starting force of what was to become Bay City Public Schools Secertairal Support Assoc. She was a volunteer for Created for Caring after retiring from the school district.

Bev had a love for the outdoors and spent a lot of time and energy in caring for her wildlife friends. Trips to Round Lake Campground and many special memories of travel were made with her family. She was a caring and classy woman. You always knew where you stood with her.

Beverly is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, Carl H. Doan, whom she married January 27, 1951 at Christian Assembly Church. She is also survived by one son and one daughter-in-law, Randall and Cathy Doan of Bay City; three daughters and three sons-in-law: Becky and Marty Truemner of Bay City, Cindy and Ron Bowers of Flint and Pamela and Ken Dale of Goderich, Ontario; seven grandchildren: Gevin Doan, Ryan Doan, Brennan Doan, Carrie Truemner, Troy Ferrio, Marnie Dale and Justin Dale; three sisters and three brothers-in-law: Sharon and Gary Bishop of Bay City, Gene and Mary Niedzwicki of Gaylord, Penny and Ron Neuchterlein of Northville; two brothers and two sisters-in-law: Timothy and Lois Pennell of Bay City and Terry and Mary Pennell of Bay City; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Clarence and Virgina Doan, Thomas Nathan and Mary Ida Doan, Leonard and Priscilla Schweitzer all of Bay City and William and Charlotte Gaus of Saginaw.

Funeral Services will take place 11 a.m. Wed., October 31, 2007, Christian Assembly Church. Officiating will be Pastor John C. Wellhousen with interment following in Oak Ridge Cemetery where she rests under the large oak trees in the miltary section of the cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Tuesday from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. Mrs. Doan will be taken to the church on Wednesday to lie in state from 10:00 a.m. and until the time of service. Memorial cards for Christian Assembly Church will be available at the funeral home.

Biography

Carl Herman Doan was born on 21 July 1929 in Bay City, Bay, Michigan.1 He and Beverly (Bev) Lou Pennell were married on 27 January 1951 in Bay City, Bay, Michigan, Christian Assembly Church.2 He died on 20 December 2011, at age 82, in Bay City, Bay, Michigan.1 He was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Bay City, Bay, Michigan.1

Carl graduated from Bay City Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army. A handsome man, he has been appropriately nicknamed by family members. He has served his church as a member of the board and of the choir. He has a wonderful baritone voice. A friendly, caring man, he is loved by many. His hobby of carpentry has served him well in the remodeling of his home, his church, making of furniture, etc. Carl is an avid fan of the outdoors as a hunter, fisherman, and camper.

Our loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on Dec. 20th 2011, at his home with his family at his side. Carl was born on July 21st. 1929 in Bay City, Michigan to Herman and Grace Doan. His parents died very early in his life, and his siblings worked hard to keep the family together. He was raised by several aunts and sisters, Charlotte Gaus (deceased), Pricilla Schweitzer and his brothers, Nathan Doan (deceased), and Clarence Doan. Carl married Beverly Lou Pennell on January 27th 1951, she predeceased Dad in Oct. 2007 .Carl attended the Christian Assembly Church, where they met, married and raised their children to serve the Lord.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-laws, Mary Ida Doan, Sharon & Gary Bishop, Terry & Mary Pennell, Mary & Gene Niedzwiecki, Penny & Ron Neuchterlein, and Tim & Lois Pennell.

Carl served as a railway trainman in the U.S. Army. After serving he later sailed on the Great Lakes and worked for the railroad. He then went to work in the Bay City Public Schools from 1954 until his retirement in 1991.

Carl and Bev were blessed with four children, a son Randall Doan (Cathy), twin daughters Cindy Bowers (Ronald), Becky Truemner (Martin) , and Pamela Dale (Kenneth). He cherished his seven grandchildren, Gevin, Ryan, and Brennan Doan, Carrie Truemner Hardy (Justin), Marni Dale Rody (Rick), Justin Dale, and Troy Ferrio (Bowers).

Carl had many great adventures in his life. Round Lake, and the AuSable River were favorite fishing and camping spots, as well as many trips made around the United States and Canada. In later years they purchased a cabin in Harrison and spent many of their summers there.

The family would like to thank the staff of Sheffield Bay for their loving care and friendships. Many thanks to his compassionate care givers, Holly Spencer, Pam Spencer, Aubrie Schoerner, Debbie Beach, his grandson Gevin Doan. We would like to thank the McClaren Hospice team for their constant care, love and support through this difficult time. There aren't enough words to say how much you are admired, and how much you are appreciated for your loving care of Carl.

Funeral Services will take place Friday, December 23, 2011 12:00 o'clock Noon at Christian Assembly Church. Officiating will be Rev. Larry Kirkpatrick and Rev. William Severance with interment following in Oak Ridge Cemetery followed by Military Honors conducted by the Bay County Veterans Council. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Thursday from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. Mr. Doan will be taken to the church on Friday to lie in state from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. In Lieu of flowers those wishing an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Nate & Mary Ida Doan Santa House.
