Montague resident Janice Louise Simmons Ballenstin passed away Jan. 24, 2005.

Janice was born Oct. 2, 1960. She graduated from Yreka High School in 1978, and earned her AA degree from College of the Siskiyous.

Janice was a kind and gentle person to her family and friends, and had a tremendous love for animals. She was a member of the Lancerett Drill Team during her teen years. Janice loved art and making crafts. Among her favorite things were antiques, trips to the Oregon Coast, Pepsi, the Seattle Seahawks, and having fun with her friends.

In 2002, Janice married John Ballenstin and they made their home in Montague. In addition to her husband, John Ballestin, survivors include her father, Richard Simmons, of Montague; mother Velma Nelson, of Montague; sister and brother-in-law Devanee and Richard McCurdy, of Montague; nieces, Blythe, Hilary and Madison McCurdy; aunt and uncle, Don and Marge Nelson, of Yuba City; and aunt, Cheryl Simmons, of Yreka.

There is a memorial service 1 p.m. Jan. 28 at Montague Methodist Church, 12th and King streets in Montague. Donations may be sent to the Montague Fire Department - Rescue, P.O. Box 281 Montague, CA. 96064.
