MY MOTHER'S STORY ABOUT THE REUBEN BUFFY FAMILY UP TO WHEN HER BROTHER MARK DIED IN 1909
Charlotte Esther HICKS
by Charlotte Lillian Buffy
Rain, Rain, go away come again some other day, little Markie wants to play - but it won't stop raining.
It has rained for 2 solid weeks & the little Thames River in London, Ont. is overflowing its banks. Mother is getting so upset, she says we should have stayed in Strathroy. Dad is a carpenter and the building trade is not very good, so Dad worked at Aylmer's canning factory when they were doing the tomatoes in the fall. When that job was finished he ehard they wanted summer cottages built along the Thames outside of London. Consequently Dad rented an old cottage near the river bank and we came here to live in 1904.
Mother was pregnant and I was about to be born. Grandma Hicks came to stay with us because Mother was afraid to get in a rowboat. Dad came & went to work by rowboat, had to tie up to a picket fence & walk the top of the fence to get in a window. I arrived when the water had risen almost to the mattress on the bed. Grandma was walking around with rubber boots on. Dad took Markie to Grandma Buffy's on High or Hill St. in London, he was 4 yrs old. About a week later the water was receding & as soon as possible we moved back to the city. We lived at 9 Rectory St. Dad was working for a contractor, they built a whole street of new houses. We lived in one of them, from the upstairs window could watch the kids & adults having fun in their swimming pool.
Father had a chance to take us back to Roland, Man. Aunt Hetty's (my mothers sister) husband had died & she wanted us to come back. She said there was lots of work building houses so we went back & lived on the same street as Aunt Hetty, about 2 houses from her. A widow lady owned it and wanted to rent. It was a 1 1/2 or 2 storey house, Blossom was born while we lived there. The lady who owned the house was a Mrs. Heatherington or Heatherspoon something similar to that. She had gone to stay with her daughter in Ontario for a while. We moved back again to London & lived out Chelsea Green I think. Dad worked at McClary Stone Factory. Blossom was about 1 1/2 yrs when we went back East again.
Mother was always very Religious, she loved to go to revivals. She took Markie with her and a young boy sang "Tell Mother I'll be there, an answer to a prayer, Just tell my darling Mother I'll be there" Mark sang that constantly afterwards.
I remember starting school in a little cottage where they had Kindergarten class. It was just inside the school yard fence & the school was at the back of the lot. I think it was Dundas School just a short way from Dundas St.(one of the main sts). I went to school there till I was 9 1/2 yrs old, then the war started (1914-1918). Mother was always warning me about getting in a strange car, there was hardly any cars then, the police even road around on bicycles. There was a lot of talk about white slavery & teachers at school always kept at us about talking to men we didn't know. One day coming home from school a big fancy car went past my girlfriend Gloria & I, the car was a lot of chrome & black shiney paint. There were two men in it with dark eyes & slick back hair, one in the front seat and the other in back. They stopped & asked Gloria & I to come with them and they would drive us home. I said "NO Mother said not to" but Gloria said "Oh Lily its such a pretty car". The man in the back said "I've got some candy for you" so she got in the back seat and they drove away. No one ever saw her again.
Dad's father was an architect, Dad also drew plans& Specifications for all kinds of buildings. He heard about a steady job working in Ft. William, Ont. at Copp Foundry where they made shell casings of all kinds. Dad had the job of making the blueprints for the workers. We lived on Empress ST. and the foundry was on the corner. The railroad tracks to the foundry went down the middle of Empress St.
Dad finished his summer work and had a chance to go to St. Thomas. There was a factory being built outside of St. Thomas and they needed someone who could read blueprints and supervise the building. I've forgotten the company name but will try to find out what was built around there at that time 1909.
Grandma Hicks had moved to St. Thomas, 20 miles on the traction line from London, she had a boarding house and wanted Mother to help, thats why we moved to St. Thomas. When we were driving to our new home we saw many red signs on the houses. At the end of the traction line we had to walk a few blocks to our place, so many red signs on most houses. Markie asked Mother what it was and she said they had dyptheria or as they called it then Membrane Croup, so Mark walked down the middle of the road, he said he didn't wanrt to get that. The epidemic was so bad they closed the school for a time, the only thing they seemed to have to prevent it was something they called Anti-Toxin. If you got the shot in time.
Mark got the croup and within a week had passed away. He couldn't breathe and was trying to get to the window, Dad tried to hold him, he died in his arms. Poor Dad, Mark was his pride & joy. He went away by himself and we didn't see him for three months. He was heart broken and thats when he started to drink. I gues it was the only way he could forget. I remember well the funeral, the undertaker had a tressell of steps and a platform in front of the window so the school children came to see him in his coffin and pay their last respects. I was 4 1/2 yrs old and had just started kindergarten.
I had a lovely sister named Blossom Irene born in Roland, Mb. She got Dyptheria too, when she was about 1 1/2 yrs. I'll never forget that time, Mark had died in December, Christmas day Blossom was not expected to live. Dad was home again & the Dr. told him if Bloss lived until 12 o'clock midnight she would be okay. Dad called the Dr. just after 12 & he came back. I had started coughing so Mother told me to stay out of sight & not cough because every shot of Anti Toxin was $5.00 and we didn't have the money. It was Christmas Eve, the Dr. heard me cough & gave me the shot, it just stiffened my back. I sure had problems, not a tiolet like now just a chamber (we called it) under the bed and if I went to sit down on it I fell down. Christmas morning I felt better so came into the living room. I remember a tree and a whole set of books for Mark, so Dad gave them to me. It was the Alger series - Do or Die, Strive & Suceed, about ten books, also a horn for Mark & doll clothes for me. I picked up the horn & blew it & had the whole house pounce in me. Blosom was over the crisis, everything was going to be alright, so that was the greatest Christmas before or after.
Aunt Hetty wrote to Mother to say their was a job in Roland, a warehouseman for the Jewel Store. Dad applied and got the job, so we moved by train to Roland. One scary episode, Mother got off the train at a small town & ran to the store across the tracks to get milk for Bloss. The train started moving and Mother was lucky the trainman saw her and grabbed her hand to pull her on. There wasn't any dining car or food at all, you just brought your own lunch. Sometimes there was a lunch counter in the station, you would barely have time to get a bowl of soup and a sandwich.
This is where Mom stopped and we haven't been able to find any more of her story. They are all gone now so we don't have the details needed to complete the story. Manitoba, Marriage Index, 1879-1931
