Bethel Granahan, passed away peacefully at LaConner Retirement Inn on November 12, 2014. She was 96 years old, born in Waterloo, Iowa on May 24, 1918.
Bethel married Henry E. Granahan on September 20, 1938 in Cresco, Iowa. In December 1957 the family moved to Whatcom County where they operated a dairy farm for 18 years, retiring in 1974 to Burlington, WA.
Bethel was very active in her Catholic parishes of Chester, IA; Lynden & Burlington. Serving on many committees including; Historian for the Northern Deanery and St. Charles Parish (Burlington), Archdiocesan Ecumenical Council and WA State Council of Churches.
Bethel was an active member of the following: The Orthopedic Club, Ten Mile and Fredonia Granges. She served as Treasurer of the Senior Volunteer Advisory Board and Burlington Senior Center Advisory Board. Bethel volunteered at the Burlington and Mount Vernon Schools, and senior care centers. Bethel was on the Friendship House Advisory Board the first three years of its existence. Bethel was instrumental as a volunteer in the developing the Skagit County Chapter of a new program called S.H.I.B.A (Senior Health Insurance Benefit Advisors) and also served as Skagit/Whatcom County Coordinator for the State Insurance Commissioners Office for 17 years.
Bethel was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, and two of her sons, Leonard and LaVern.
Bethel is survived by two daughters: Marlys Jenkins of Seattle, Ethel (Thom) Reese of Burlington; and three sons: Ervin (Phyllis) Granahan of Montesano, Jerry (Pat) Granahan of Mount Vernon and Steve (Pam) Granahan of Mount Vernon, along with 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosary Service, 7:30pm Wed., Nov. 19th and Funeral Mass at 10 am, Thurs. Nov. 20th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaConner. Internment on Fri,. Nov. 21st at 10:30 am at Greenacres Memorial Park, Ferndale, WA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the N.W., Mount Vernon or ICRS, 1321 E. Division Street, MV, 98274.
