Seth Yerrington, 74
Anchorage resident Seth W. Yerrington, 74, died Feb. 2, 2006, at home of cancer.
He was a practicing architect for five decades. His built work stands in every region of the state and he mentored many designers.
A celebration of his life will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Alano Club, 3103 Spenard Road.
Mr. Yerrington was born Oct. 16, 1931, in Stamford, Conn., to Ann and Seth Yerrington. He lived in Maine, New York and other places in the East, graduating from high school in New York in 1949.
Mr. Yerrington received an architecture degree from the University of Idaho in 1956. He met and married Carolyn Clark in 1952. They lived in Idaho and Washington state and moved to Seattle around 1957.
Mr. Yerrington opened his architectural practice in 1963. In 1968, he and his family moved into a home he designed in Seattle. He came to Anchorage in 1969 and opened an office in 1970, splitting his time between Anchorage and Seattle. His family joined him in Anchorage for the summer of 1971 and moved up in 1972. He and Carolyn divorced in 1975. He was then married to Luba Stover from 1978-90. They lived in Homer in the late 1980s in a home he built in 1983.
He was the architect's on-site representative for the construction of Alaska Native Medical Center from 1995-97 and worked for other firms in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Barrow. He was married to Josephine Rice from 1996 to 2002. In 2006, he married Rita Burke, who was his constant companion during the past year and cared for him at home during his illness.
His family wrote, "Mr. Yerrington was known for gregarious presence and charitable actions."
Survivors are his wife, Rita Yerrington; son, David Yerrington; daughter, Jan Carl; son and daughter-in-law, Dirk and Sadie Yerrington; son, Clark Yerrington; stepmother, Marie Yerrington; sister, Cornelia Hill; nephew, Seth Hill; his stepmother's three sisters, Betty, Anne and Lois; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Ann; and three nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Anchorage.
Local arrangements were by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes & Crematory. He was educated in University of Idaho in 1952.
