5 Anchorage Daily News October 11, 1996
Julia ''Jewel'' Gertrude Augustine (Plumb) Royce, 99, died quietly in her sleep at the Palmer Pioneers' Home on Oct. 7, 1996. She would have been 100 on Oct. 21. A memorial service was held at Witzleben's Bragaw Chapel. A celebration of her life was held at her grandchildren's home. She was born in 1896 in Buffalo, N.Y., to William and Jennie Augustine. She spent her early years on the family farm, where one of her jobs was to ride horseback into town for the weekly mail. She married C.L. ''Les'' Plumb in October 1914. Shortly thereafter, the couple moved to Canada, where they homesteaded ''a ways'' from Calgary. In September 1915, they returned to Buffalo where their son, Earl, was born. They tried to adjust to civilized living, but the lure of the wilds called them again. They traveled from New York back to Canada, where they homesteaded outside of Cochran until 1926, when wanderlust took over again. They traveled to Florida, where they ran a small restaurant and gas stop until the Depression set in. At that point, they decided to head west. Her family wrote: ''Jewel, Les and their young son drove into Seattle in early 1929. Jewel insisted that the car's wheels were singing, 'To Alaska, to Alaska.' ''So, in September they arrived in Seward aboard the steamer Yukon. From there they took the train to Talkeetna, where Jewel worked as camp cook for the Alaska Railroad during the winter and drove the tourist bus through Denali Park during the summer. ''In 1932, the family moved to Anchorage. Les continued to work for the railroad and Jewel settled into being a housewife at their little house on M Street, which her husband and son, Earl, built for her. This home is featured in Patterns of the Past, a volume on Alaska's historical structures. ''Over the next few years they spent summers mining at Lake Chalatna, and Jewel worked at Crocker's Department Store in the winters. ''Jewel enjoyed the wonders of Alaska's wilderness and truly lived the 'Alaskan Dream.' She taught ice skating, played classical piano, bought and sold real estate, bred and showed cocker spaniels in the '50s and raised and showed horses in the '60s. In 1953, Jewel and longtime friend Franklin Royce formed a partnership and purchased an old homestead outside of Ninilchik. In 1955, they decided to make it a wedding present to one another and were married at a small church in the area. Many years later this property was developed and is now known as Plumb Bluff Estates. ''The Royces' residence at Lois and 36th Avenue in Spenard was the home to many lost and orphaned animals, ranging from pigeons to horses. ''Jewel spent her life as many wish they might have. She traveled the length and breadth of North America and settled in some of its great wilderness areas. She loved the rugged life and the people she found in it and yet was fascinated by the wonders of technology and space travel. Her family will miss her and Alaska has lost one of its early pioneers.'' Jewel was preceded in death by her first husband, Les Plumb, and her second husband, Franklin Royce. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Frieda Plumb; grandchildren, Laurie Plumb, Linda Plumb and Roger Plumb; great-grandchildren, John Buckley, Kristal Buckley and Charles Smith; and four great-great-grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary. Julie (Jewel) Gertrude Augustine immigrated in 1911.
