(1934 - 2015)
Bruce D. "Boo Boo" Hammond, 81 completed his life journey at his home on Wed., March 4, 2015. Bruce was born in Flint, Michigan and as a teenager, he was a loyal member of the Boys Scouts of America. Later in life, he was a proud member of the U.S. Air Force (although he was quick to remind you it was known as the Army Air Corps back then). Bruce did a stint in Korea and later decided it was time to commit to a life in the civilian world when he worked for General Motors in Flint, MI. He moved to Pensacola, FL in 1975 and then to Gulf Breeze, FL in 1997 where he remained for the rest of his life.
Bruce worked for Pensacola Testing Lab from 1990 through 2007. He was an integral part of the company as an NDT inspector certified in ultrasonic testing methods, as well as magnetic particle, liquid penetrant and radiography methods. Bruce provided his expertise in the industrial, construction, aeromotive and shipbuilding fields. Everyone not only enjoyed working with Bruce through the years, but also cherished his friendship and loyalty. In 2007, Bruce began a new adventure by working with Vice Security of Pensacola where he worked until the time of his death.
Bruce was a gregarious man with a robust personality. He was small in stature, but his voice and laughter could always be heard across a room full of people. Bruce had an amazing memory and he could recall and recount a multitude of jokes. He was a lover of the great crooners of his time, such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Mel Torme, Johnny Mathis, Bobby Darin and Tony Bennett. He could "name that singer" quickly after only a few words of a song. Bruce was an avid Nascar fan as well. His favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. He never missed a race on TV if he could help it and attended a number of Nascar races with his "adopted" niece and nephew Dee Dee and Shane. Bruce was a tolerant and forgiving person, respectful of people and open-minded. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him in this life, both at work and in personal relationships. Thanks for all the memories, Boo Boo!
Bruce is preceded in death by his parents, Tolan and Margaret Hammond. He is survived by his daughter Peggy Nettleton, her husband Rick and their children, Rodney and Tabatha, as well as Bruce's son Howard Hammond, wife Brenda and their son, Howie, Jr., along with Bruce's brother Tolan Hammond Jr. and his wife Doris. Bruce leaves behind his loving companion of 17 years, Jean Wesemann of Gulf Breeze, along with her sister Shirley Daugherty and her daughter Deborah (Dee Dee) and her sons, John Daugherty and Shane Carlson and his wife Wendy. Bruce is also survived by his beloved special furry friend, "Friday".
