Biography

Wilbert Charles Smith was born in February 1872 in Michigan.3 He was born on 24 February 1872 in Burnside, Lapeer, Michigan.1,2 He and Delila Ann (Lila) Hinkley were married about 1899. He and Anna Hinkley were married about 1899. He and Delila Ann (Lila) Hinkley were married on 7 November 1899 in Burnside, Lapeer, Michgan.3,4 He died after 1930. He died on 14 July 1955, at age 83, in Bristol, Lake, Michigan.
Wilbert Charles Smith was also known as Wilbert Wilford C. , Smith/.3 He was a Janitor in Brass Foundry.5 He was a Janitor in Brass Factory.5 Wilford Charles Smith, son of Philo Burton and Sarah Elizabeth (BIGELOW) Smith, was born February 24, 1872, in Burnside Township, Lapeer County, Michigan. He was the second youngest of eleven siblings.

He was united in marriage with Miss Delila Ann Hinkley, daughter of Henry and Lydia (Harris) Hinkley, on November 7, 1899, by the Justice of the Peace in Burnside, Lapeer County, Michigan. To this union were born four children, three sons, Glen, Oakley, and Velsor, and one daughter Idolia.

The family moved to Edward, Ogema County, where they are found in the 1910 census. Wilford is listed as age: 38, married 12 years, father of two sons, Glen and Oakley. Occupation: general laborer.

They moved to Yale, in the northwest corner of St Clair County and Wilford is listed in the 1920 census at age 47, owns home on Mary Street, father of three children still living at home: Oakley, 17; Idolia, 7, and Velsor, 4 1/2 years. His occupation: Scutcher* at flax mill.

*[Note: "scutcher" = one who "separates the valuable fibers of (flax, for example) from the woody parts by beating"].

The family moved once again in the 1930 census shows them living in Port Huron, 4th Ward, St Clair, Michigan. Wilford is listed at age: 58, rents home at 534 10th Street, $18/mo, married at age 26; one son, Velsor, 14, still at home. Also is nephew Arthur Hutchinson, 19, living with them. Occupation: jjanitor at Mueller's Brass Company.

In later years Wilford and Lila enjoyed several retirement years in the north woods of Michigan's Lower Peninsula when they moved to Bristol in Lake County.

It was here that Wilford passed from this life to the next on July 14th, 1955, at the age of 83 years, 4 months, 20 days. His body was laid to rest in Bristol Township Cemetery (aka Dover Cemetery) on July 17th, 1955.

He was survived by:

William H Drader, 73, of 641 N Third St, St Clair, died Saturday morning in Mercy Hospital, Port Huron, after a long illness. Mr. Drader, a resident of St Clair for four years, was born December 18, 1890, in Brown City. He lived in Center Line for many years, and was a retired employee of the Michigan Tool Company there.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Grace Drader; a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Sanger, St Clair; a brother, Joseph C Drader, Birmingham, MI; three step-daughters: Mrs. Ruth Closs, St Clair; Mrs. Alice Sewa, Pennsylvania, and Mrs Rebecca Thomas, Marysville; three step-sons, Carl Hutchinson and Richard Rock, both of St Clair, and Victor Rock, Auburn Heights, MI.

The remains are in the Bower-Greenway Funeral Home, St Clair, where services will be conducted at 11AM Tuesday by Rev Rex Reid, pastor of First Methodist Church, St Clair. Burial services will be conducted at 3pm Tuesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Detroit

Hawley Closs

ST. CLAIR...Hawley Closs, age 95, of St. Clair, passed away Wednesday, November 15, 2006. He was born October 30, 1911 in St. Clair, son of the late Duncan and Agnas Closs.

He and Ruth Rock were married on August 5, 1939 in St. Clair.

Hawley retired from Detroit Edison in 1972. Since retirement he enjoyed spending his winter months in Leesburg, Florida and summer time with family and friends. Memories of him cutting the lawn, riding his bike, camping, watching Detroit Tigers, and sharing the newspaper with everyone will never be forgotten.

Hawley will be greatly missed by:

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2006 . Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, St. Clair.

His greatgrandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the wishes of the family.
