Joseph (Joe) Leonard Ross1,2
M, #53540, b. 14 April 1915, d. 3 July 2005
Biography
Joseph (Joe) Leonard Ross was born on 14 April 1915 in Wilkes Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania.
3 He died on 3 July 2005, at age 90, in Marlette, Sanilac, Michigan.
1,2,3 He was buried in Marlette City Cemetery, Marlette, Sanilac, Michigan.
2,42 Joseph (Joe) Leonard Ross was a Teacher in Marlette, Sanilac, Michigan.
1 He was educated in University of Scranton/University of Michigan.
1 JOSEPH L. ROSS
Old-time B-17 bombardier and Marlette teacher completed his final mission on July 3. Joseph L. Ross, 90, landed safely home in heaven at 4:20 a.m.
As a believer, Joe had studied theology and practiced Christianity all of his life in preparation for spending eternity with God.
Hospice and family had kept vigil at his side at home for a week: wife Patrecia, sons Patrick and Martin, Pat?s sister Cora Jean Atkins and husband Don, and Pat's mother Ila Mae Taylor. Daughters-in-law Janet and Linda and granddaughter Elizabeth arrived later. Joe's sister Rosemarie and husband Bill Kearns, Pats sister Janice and husband Don Hatto reside in Florida.
Graduates of Marlette High School from 1946 to 1959 will remember "Little Joe" as their Latin or English teacher.
They will recall how the little Irish-Italian man from Pennsylvania had married Patrecia Ann Taylor in 1953 and how the community had come to their aid when son Michael died of leukemia at age 5 1/2.
Joe had spent all of WWII in the South Pacific serving as bombardier on B-17?s and later B-29?s. One of his most memorable experiences was flying over the USS Missouri when MacArthur and the Japanese High Command signed the Peace Treaty in August of 1945.
With B.A. and M.A. degrees from University of Scranton and University of Michigan, Joe taught for 11 years in Marlette. Then the family moved to Riverview, south of Detroit, where he taught until his retirement in 1980.
Exactly six years ago, Joe and Patrecia moved from Riverview back to Marlette, her hometown. Both the library and his bedroom are full of the books he loved so well, mostly history, political science, theology, WW11 especially, with a few joke books here and there.
Even though Joe didn't venture out much, he was his wife's best fan as she organized the Messiah concerts, gave house concerts, played duets with her sister, and worked in the community in various ways.
n lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Marlette Historical Society for the depot restoration project. Envelopes are available at Marsh Funeral Home or Victorian Expressions downtown.
A community memorial service took place on July 11 at the Marlette Baptist Church, Pastors Mark Nieman and Peter Rufener conducting.
