Charles (Chuck) R. Gronda, 74, of Middleburg, Fla., went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born June 15, 1938 in Saginaw, Mich. to Floyd and Vivian Gronda.
He is survived by his brother, Everett (EJ) Gronda (Linda); his children, Craig R. Gronda (Deborah), Jeffery C. Gronda (Jaime), Russ T. Broka (Allyson), and Robin N. Frick (Ryan); and his grandchildren, Trevor Gronda, Jordan Gronda, Kaylee Keiser, Jenna Carpenter, Hannah Carpenter, Kierra Frick, Seth Broka, Luke Broka, Levi Broka and Selah Broka.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Vivian Gronda, and his wife, Jean Gronda.
Chuck loved golf and was always very good at it. He was Cheboygan Golf and Country Club men's club champion 13 times, and also won the Northern Michigan Open two times. He was also men's club champion at Beacon Woods in Hudson, Fla. three times. One of the unique things was that he played golf for 32 years before getting his first hole in one, but then went on to have 8 more in a short period of time.
He was the Cheboygan Area High School golf coach for 31 years, as well as coaching football and baseball. He was an industrial arts teacher for 30 ½ years in Saginaw, Mich. and Cheboygan, Mich. teaching wood shop and drafting. Chuck was also a tremendous baseball player, playing for Central Michigan University in the early '60s, setting many records in his tenure there. He was offered two big league contracts, one with the Detroit Tigers and one with the Boston Red Sox; he turned them both down and finished his education and started a family. He was also a good bowler and averaged 210+ up into his late 60s. He won the Classic's in Cheboygan in the '80s and as far as we know, is the only person to win both the Northern Michigan Open and the Classic's.
Chuck also loved building. He could build anything with wood from small pieces of furniture to houses. He would build and remodel homes in his off time in the summer and continued to do that up until a month before he passed. He loved to go to his kids houses and built anything their spouses wanted and usually more.
Chuck was a tremendous role model to many people, especially the kids he taught and coached. There was almost nothing that he wouldn't do for anyone that asked; he was always thinking of others and loved to help with anything he could. As a father, you could ask for no better! He was always there for all of us as we grew up and continued to be there for his grandchildren, teaching them all of the great virtues that he had; we are all so much better for it.
We are planning a memorial for him this summer with possibly a golf tournament in Cheboygan. We will keep everyone up to date on the plans and the dates that it will happen. Contributions can be made to the Cheboygan High School Golf team in his name; all proceeds from the golf tournament will go to the team as well.
Heaven is richer and earth is poorer for his passing, but remember all that he taught us and his legacy will remain and a piece of him will live forever in us!
