3 A coroner's verdict of murder and suicide was returned today in the slaying last night of a 25 year old woman in a Mt. Gilead restaurant and the subsequent self-destruction of her slayer.
Mrs. Mary Martha Smith, of Mt. Gilead, died in Mansfield General Hospital at 10:30 p.m., 25 minutes after she was shot three times in the Traxler-Rule restaurant, police reported.
Police said Robert Pearson, 32, shot Mrs. Smith in the head, left side and arm before horrified onlookers, then held cafe patrons at gun point before fleeing out the front door of the establishment.
State highway Patrolman W. H. Culp a few minutes later broke into Pearson's room at the Globe hotel, where he found him mortally wounded with a bullet wound behind his right ear. A . 765 MM German automatic was found at his side.
Sheriff Tom England said a heated argument arose in the restaurant after Mrs. Smith refused to accompany Pearson to Galion.
Earlier in the day, according to Sheriff England, Mrs. Smith had received word from her husband, Marine Don J. Smith, that he had arrived on the west coast and would be home soon.
Police said Pearson had been separated from his Canadian-born wife for several months, but had known Mrs. Smith for only a short time. Mrs. Pearson recently returned to Canada, the sheriff said.
Pearson was an employe of the Mt. Gilead Manufacturing Company.
Private funeral services for Pearson will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Craven funeral home, with Rev. Ray McMillan officiating. Burial will be in Fulton cemetery.
Pearson leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pearson, Mt. Gilead; two sisters, Mrs. Faye Smith, Mansfield, and Mrs. May Katherine Wolfinger, Mt. Gilead; a brother Foye Pearson, Columbus, and his wife Mrs. Margaret Pearson, of Canada.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith are awaiting the return of her husband. She also leaves her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Gault, in southern Ohio.
