Biography

Gloria Ann Wintermute was born on 19 November 1923 in Sedan, Chautauqua, Kansas.1 She and Lawrence J. Rippee, Jr., were married in 1943.2 She died on 19 July 2009, at age 85, in Joplin, Jasper, Missouri.1
Gloria Ann Wintermute was in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin, Jasper, Missouri.1 Gloria Ann Rippee, age 85, Joplin, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2009, at 3:30 p.m. at The Greenbriar after several years of illness.

Gloria was born in the Flint Hills of Kansas, on a farm to Earl Wintermute and Edith Denman near Sedan, Kan.

After graduating from high school, she moved to Stockton, Calif., where she and her fiance', Lawrence Rippee Jr., were stationed and they were married in 1943. Lawrence was sent overseas to fight in the Battle of the Bulge and Gloria returned to Sedan, to run the family restaurant. After the war, Lawrence and Gloria moved to Joplin, and started their family.

Gloria was a loving mother and devoted wife. She was an avid collector of antiques and loved to attend sales looking for that special piece. Gloria was an exceptional golfer in the mid 1960s, and won and placed in several tournaments around Joplin, and the four states area. In her later years, Gloria was a champion tomato grower. She will be missed by many.

Gloria was preceded in death by her first son, Jon, who was killed while serving this country in Vietnam in September of 1968; and by her husband of 60 years, Lawrence, who passed away in November of 2003.

Survivors include her son, Joe Rippee, who will return to his home in California.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, July 22, at 2:30 p.m. in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Simon officiating. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Wednesday from 1 until 2 p.m.Online condolences may be made at parkermortuary.com.

Lawrence J. Rippee, Jr., was born on 11 July 1921 in Chautauqua County, Kansas.1 He and Gloria Ann Wintermute were married in 1943.2 He died on 4 November 2003, at age 82, in Joplin, Jasper, Missouri.1 He was buried in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin, Jasper, Missouri.12

Lawrence Rippee Jr., age 82, of Joplin, passed away at his home at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, after a long illness. Born July 11, 1921, in Chataugua County, Kan., he was the son of the late Lawrence Rippee Sr. and Olive Bray Rippee, and had lived in Joplin since 1952. He was a salesperson for Kraft Foods Co. for 31 years, retiring in 1984. A U.S. army World War II veteran, he served with the Second Armored Division in France and Germany. He was a life member of Joplin Elk's Lodge No. 501. He was an avid golfer and an accomplidhrf bird dog trainer for field trials. He volumteered for Babe Ruth Baseball League and Joplin Little League. In 1943 he married Gloria A. Wintermute, of Stockton, Calif. She survives. Additional survivors include a son, Joe Rippee, of Springfield, Mo.; and a sister, Marion Record, of Springfield. A son, John Alan Rippee, preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 1968, while serving our country in Vietnam. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, with Rev. Bob Simon officiating, under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Military rites will be conducted by Robert S. Thurman American Legion Post No. 13.
