Life Story / Obituary
Passed away Thursday January 19, 2006. Vernice was born June 25, 1940 in Mason, MI the daughter of Alfred and Frances (Keene) Sherman who preceded her in death.
She was a graduate of Spring Arbor College, attended Western Michigan University and was also a graduate of the Bronson School of Nursing. While on affiliation with the Kalamazoo Regional State Hospital she met her future husband, Fred LaLone, who worked in the Safety Department. Vernice also attended Seattle College in Washington for a year. In June of 1963, Fred flew to Los Angeles where he and Vernice met and were married on June 11. On returning from their honeymoon, Vernice started working at Bronson Methodist Hospital where she worked for over 36 years, spending time in her later years at Bronson Vicksburg Hospital. Vernice and Fred also owned a small resort called Willow Beach Grocery Resort on Gravel Lake in Lawton where they raised their two sons. Vernice enjoyed tr aveling with Fred in their motor home to different areas and belonged t o the Goodsam Kazoo Campers. Vernice was also a member of the Bronson Alumni; Portage Garden Club; and the Portage First United Methodist Church where she was involved with the Margaret Circle and other small groups. She loved gardening at home, and helped with gardening at Putters Family Fun Center, and the church.
Surviving besides her husband Fred, are 2 sons and their spouses, Kevin and Tammy LaLone, Keith and Michelle LaLone; a brother, Vernon Sherman; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service to celebrate Vernice's life will be held 1:00 o'clock Saturday, February 11 at the Portage First United Methodist Church, 8740 S. Westnedge with Pastors Greg Wood and John Moore officiating. Private interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Portage First United Methodist Church. Arrangements by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick.
