JEFFERSON - Golden Dawn in Jefferson is a grocery store from another era, one without a self checkout, where cigarettes and Zippo lighter fluid are still stored in cabinets at the entrance and wild game is mounted on walls. Up until recent times, one could buy some ammunition along with their eggs. Now, after more than 43 years in business, the store's owners have decided to call it quits.
The store was opened in 1975 by Lawrence "Larry" Sonoski, who died in April 2016 at 82. Sonoski, who moonlighted as a polka musician, took pride in growing and improving his store, including expanding its inventor y to include sporting goods, according to his obituary. Over the years he employed countless members of the community, as well as his children and grandchildren.
After his death, Sonoski's children, Laurie Calaway and Larry and Chris Sonoski, took over operations as co-owners.
