After a lingering illness, the venerable Tunis Tunnison, one of the eldest citizens of Stillwater township died at his home on Friday last, in the 88 year of his age. He was the son of Tunis Tunnison, a blacksmith, and was born in Hunterdon county, N.J., September 25, 1794 and removed with his father to Stillwater township when a young man. He married Anna M. Dodder, daughter of Henry Dodder, of Stillwater township, who died November 28, 1827, aged 77 years. Their children are: Sarah E, wife of Virgil H. Crisman, of Branchville; Henry D. of Orion, Oakland county, Michigan; Margaret, residing at home; Alice , wife of O.B. Wintermute, of Newton; Irene, wife of Wm. Wintermute, of Stillwater; and Lydia, wife of Henry Huff, of Stillwater. Mr Tunnison was one of those quiet and unostentatious farmers who never make any great noise in the world but who do well by attending strictly to their own legitimate business and acting uprightly with all mankind. In politics he was a Jeffersonian Democrat who reasoned to his own conclusions and acted on his own convictions regardless of what others might think or do. He was never an office seeker. He had been a subscriber to the New Jersey Herald almost constantly since it was started, 53 years ago. His farm is one of the finest locations in Stillwater township, and was owned by Daniel Harker over one hundred years ago.
