Horace E. Whiteside, Jr., was born in 1931.1 He and Mary Esther Shackelton were divorced. He and Mary Esther Shackelton were married on 21 July 1952. He died on 6 November 1954, at age ~23.1

PRIVATE FUNERAL services will be held Tuesday morning at Ithaca for Horace E. Whiteside, Jr., 23, of 103 Malcolm st., killed early yesterday when his car crashed into a tree in Buckley rd.The Rev. Edward Christie of Ithaca will conduct the services in the Warner Funeral Home. Location of burial has not been determind by the family yet. Whiteside is survived by his father, Horace E. Whiteside, of Ithaca, and a sister, Mrs. Anne W. Wyne, of Kenmore. Deputy sheriffs said Whiteside's car left the road, smashing into a tree, bounced 66 feet into another tree and was demolished. Dr. Harry Gilmore, county coroner, said death was due to a fractured skull. Whiteside was found pinned behind the wheel of the demolished car. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. William Locke of St. Joseph's Hospital.

John Edward Slade was born on 28 October 1922 in Troy, Pennsylvania.1 He and Mary Esther Shackelton were married on 24 November 1956 in Montrose, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. He died on 26 March 2004, at age 81, in Longwood, Seminole, Florida.1

LONGWOOD, FL - John "Jack" Edward Slade, 81, of Longwood, FL, formerly of Ithaca, NY, died March 26, 2004. Mr. Slade was born October 28, 1922 in Troy, PA, the son of the late William Clark and Dora Aumick Slade.In 1935, as a result of an automobile accident that took the life of his parents, John and his brother came to Ithaca, NY, to live with Ralph and Jennie "Jackie" Frost Smith.John graduated from Ithaca High School, served overseas in WWII, graduated from Cornell University, and became employed in Mayer's Smoke Shop (where he had worked from age 12). After Ralph Smith died, John purchased Mayer's and operated it until retiring in 1979. For many years, he and his wife, Mary, lived at Maplewood Point on the west shore of Cayuga Lake and John discovered boating, fishing and golf. He and Mary loved to entertain family and friends either for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Over the years, they took in numerous dogs and cats that needed homes and this continued up to the time of John's death.In 1980, they moved to Florida so that John could pursue his passion of playing golf nearby every day and they eventually purchased a home near the 18th hole of Rolling Hills Country Club. Mary's passion was for birds and they had as many as 60 at one time. John was an avid stamp collector for many years, held a 32nd Masonic Degree being very active in the Ithaca Lodge and continued to be active in Florida, was a former treasurer of Ithaca City Club.Surviving are his children, William R. Slade of Binghamton, NY, Michael R. (Maria) Slade of Lansing, NY, Kathleen A. Smith of Ithaca; and stepdaughter, Lynn Hoskins (Rev. Barry) Brown of Stratford, CT; also his grandchildren, Sonia Slade of Boston, MA, and Meagan Smith of Ithaca; step grandchildren, Rev. Kenneth Ross (Amy) Brown of Walnut Creek, CA, and Jason Todd (Tara) Brown of Wallingford, CT. He had six step great-grandchildren. John is survived by a brother, William A. Slade of Altamont Springs, FL; and a brother-in-la, Horace E. (Shirley) Shackelton of Dryden, NY. John was predeceased by his wife and mother of his children, Mary Therese Colbert Slade; his wife, Mary E. Shackelton Slade of 45 years.At Mr. Slade's request, there were no services.
