Richard Bennett Thompson, 96, of Naples, Fla., died on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Frances Georgeson Hospice House following a brief illness.

Mr. Thompson was born in Newark, son of Robert Wesley Thompson and Alice M. Bennett. A former resident of Montclair, he had also lived for many years in Bernardsville and maintained a summer residence at Lake Hopatcong.

He was a graduate of East Orange High School and attended The New Jersey Law School. He was employed for many years by The Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York (MONY), retiring in 1975 as executive vice president of MONY Sales Inc.

Mr. Thompson was a member of St. Mark?s Episcopal Church, Marco Island, Fla. A sailing enthusiast, he had raced his Star Class boat, which he built himself, for many years as champion of the Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club.

He was predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Marion; and a grandson, Richard J. Erickson. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Jane Erickson of Naples, Fla., and Linda T. Holstein of Mission Viejo, Calif.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service was held at Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church in Naples.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hospice of Naples Inc., 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105, would be appreciated.
