3 Gatzounas, George T. 1941-2007 Chicopee, 66, a retired 29-year member of the Springfield Police Department, died on Thursday at home. Born in Holyoke, March 8, 1941, the son ot the late Theodore and Florence (Perreault) Gatzounas, he was educated in Holyoke Schools, graduating from Holyoke High School in 1959.
He received his Associates Degree in Law Enforcement from STCC in 1974. During his career George attended various courses in hazardous devices held by the F.B.I.and West Pointe Military Academies and retired in 2000 as a Senior Bomb Technician for the Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad. He served with the Air National Guard Reserve Unit at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Flight Squadron 3710 and was a member of the Air National Guard Unit 104 at Barnes Air Base and American Legion Post 124, both in Westfield. He was a beloved Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan.
He leaves his wife of 44 years, Pauline (Toton) Gatzounas, three sons, Michael and his wife Stephanie and Matthew and his wife Kimberly, all of Chicopee and Mark and his wife Dawn of South Hadley, a daughter, Kristen Talbot, and her husband Paul of Chicopee and nine Grandchildren, Andrew, Aubrey, Nicholas, Jakob, Madeline, Sophia, Sage, Averie and Jade.
He was predeceased by his brother James Gatzounas who died in January of 1977 after being stricken while on duty as as Holyoke Police Officer.
The funeral will be held on Monday, Sept. 10, 2007 at 8:30 a.m. from the Corridan Funeral Home, 333 Springfield, St., Chicopee followed by a Mass in Holy Name Church at 9:30. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. contributions in memory of George may be made to Greyhound Options, Inc., 12 Barnes St., Ware, MA 01082. He was educated in STCC in 1974 Associate Degree in Law Enforcement.
