June 6, 1925- Feb. 28, 2006
Joe Ashby passed away peacefully, at home in Everett, on February 28, 2006, at the age of 80. Joe was born in Laundale, California, to Frankie Mae Welch and Joseph Barker Fleming.
After the death of his father, Joe and his mother moved to Arizona, where his mother married Clark Ashby, who adopted Joe. Joe attended Dysart Elementary and played football while attending Peoria High School. At the age of 17, Joe enlisted in the Navy and became a Navy Seal and served in WWII. After the war Joe relocated to Prescott, Arizona, where he became a police officer and a juvenile justice officer. He also owned a flagstone quarry in the Prescott area. He then re-enlisted and did a double stint on the U.S.S. San Francisco. In 1967 he relocated to Washington State where he joined the Ironworkers Local #86 and had a hand in the construction of many buildings in the area, including the King Dome. Joe was very active in the North Everett Little League, coaching and umpiring for many good years. In 1984 he moved to Monroe, Washington, to enjoy his later years tending to his roses and chasing his grand-babies out of the strawberry patch.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; uncle, Claude; first wife, Mary; second wife of 43 years, Margaret; son, James; granddaughter, Jeannie; daughter-in-law, Eve-lina; and great-grandson, Josh.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Elma; children, Claude Ashby, Butch Ashby, Roger Ashby, Leah Slemmer, Cynthia Mckinney, Laurie and Brian Green, Jodie Ashby, Diane Ashby, David Ashby, Theresa Satushek; and step-children, Debbie and Larry Gilmore, Valerie and Jerry Vanduren, Rhonda and Tom Bannister, and Carl and Jennie Huth. Joe also has 30 grandchildren, Jean, Casey, Terri Lynn, Tracy, Travis, Donnie, Leslie, Steven, Shelly, Joe, Jennifer, Jimmy, Candice, Lyndsie, Stephanie, Tina, Jalyn, Devonne, Joani, Jayme, Mike, Krysten, Jake, Maria, Melissa, Alex, Jessica, Robert, David; step-grand-children, Carly, Cristina, Cameron, Derek, Matthew, Isaac, Shonnessy, Keri and Jessica Bailey; and 40 great-grandchil-dren. (As PaPa used to say "It's not a record but it's a darn good average.") He loved all of his babies, from the biggest to the tinniest, from the bottom of his heart. We all loved him dearly and he will be greatly missed by all of us.
A service for Joe will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Evergreen Funeral Home, Everett.
