Dorothy Marie Crown was born on 10 November 1916 in Licking County, Ohio.1 She and Howard Woodrow Nowels were married on 27 June 1943 in Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio.2 She died on 11 February 2007, at age 90.1 She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Fremont, Sandusky, Ohio.1

Dorothy M. Nowels, 90, of Fremont passed away Sunday evening at Countryside Continuing Care Center. She was born in Licking County, Ohio to the late Nola and Helen (Kreager) Crown. She married Howard Nowels June 27, 1943 in Zanesville, OH. He preceded her in death January 2, 2006.

Dorothy was a 1934 graduate of Licking Rural High School, and a 1968 graduate of Bowling Green State University. She was a sixth grade teacher at Otis School for 16 years retiring in 1977. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. Dorothy was a member of the Fremont Federation of Women, the American Association of University Women, and the Sandusky County Historical Society. She was Director of Volunteers for the Sandusky County Chapter of the American Red Cross for many years, and also volunteered at Bethesda Care Center. In 1994 Dorothy was the Soroptomist Volunteer of the Year, and, along with her husband Howard, was the Exchange Club Golden Deeds Award winner in 1996. She also attended Elder College and Elder Hostels.

Dorothy is survived by daughters . . . [two]; son . . . ; and a brother Ronald Crown of Amarillo, TX; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by brothers Donald, Tommy, Vernon, Richard, and Herbert Crown.

Visitation: 6 to 8:30 P.M. Saturday at Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home 416 S. Arch St.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with visitation from noon until time of service.

Officiating will be Rev. William J. McConnell PhD.

Howard W. Nowels, 92, of Fremont passed away Monday at Countryside Continuing Care Center.

He was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, to the now-deceased George and Lizzie Mae (Rodgers) Nowels. On June 27, 1943, he married Dorothy M. (Crown) in Zanesville and she survives. Also surviving are daughters . . . [two]; son . . . ; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters Lois Besst and Helen Wynkoop, and brother Roger Nowels.

Mr. Nowels was a 1931 graduate of Warsaw High School. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1935 and received his masters degree there in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for four years.

Mr. Nowels was a school teacher for 33-years at Ross High School where he taught vocational agriculture.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Fremont Kiwanis Club, the Sandusky County Historical Society, the Agricultural Commission of Sandusky County, and the Sandusky County Chamber of Commerce. He was also a volunteer for Mobile Meals, and the Sandusky County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m.Thursday at Keller-Ochs-Koch Funeral Home.

Funeral services: 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with visitation there one hour prior to the service.

Burial: Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions: May be made to the Howard W. Nowels Endowment Fund at Fremont Ross High School.
