David (Big Dave) Soniel Crater was a Maintenance Electrician.2 Mr. David Soniel Crater, age 75, of Fernandina Beach, went home to be with the Lord on Monday evening, February 22, 2010. He passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones.

Born November 4, 1934 in Far Hills, NJ; he was the eldest of the two sons of the late Charles Earl and Sylvia Arundel Crater.

He graduated from Bernardsville High School, Class of 1952, Bernardsville, NJ.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1958. He served in Morocco during peacetime as a Radar Repairman. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

In 1959, he and his wife, "Betty" Elizabeth Jefferson settled in Jacksonville, FL. Mr. Crater worked over thirteen years for Wilson Toomer Fertilizer Company as a Maintenance Electrician. In 1971, he began his new job with Container Corporation of America (CCA) that brought his family to Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Mr. Crater, better known as "Big Dave" retired from (CCA) as a Maintenance Electrician, in 1997. He was a member and past President of the IBEW Local 1924, had served on the Board of Directors for: the Container Mutual Credit Union, the I.B.E.W. and Kraft Athletic Club. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 400, Orlando, FL. Throughout his lifetime, his habit was to read the daily paper

He was known by family and friends for freely sharing both vegetables raised in his garden and his well-considered opinions in a number of "Letters to the Editor" published in the Fernandina Beach News Leader and Florida Times Union. He wrote well and produced a monthly newsletter for the CCA retirees for a few years.

He always had a very positive outlook, good sense of humor and loved life. He was an avid sports fan and "armchair quarterback".

He was the beloved solid patriarch, and there for his family when they needed him. Throughout his life, he displayed his unconditional love to family, friends and others. He was very generous, wise, fair, considerate and loyal. He gave advice to many (who asked for it). He was big and strong, yet gentle, understanding and compassionate.

Mr. Crater is survived by, his loving wife and helpmate of over 50 years, Betty Crater, Fernandina Beach, their three daughters, Darlene J. Crater (Richard Shelton), Yulee, FL, Dawn C. Boatwright, Jacksonville, FL, Diane M. Tauscher (Matthew), Fernandina Beach, FL, a brother, Donald A. Crater (Roberta), Brookhaven, NY, four grandchildren, David Jones, Micah Tauscher, Kayln Boatwright, Zach Tauscher, one great grandchild, Wyatt Jones and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, on Thursday, from the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard Funeral Home with, his son-in-law, Pastor Matthew Tauscher, of Calvary Baptist Church, Fernandina Beach, FL, officiating.

A short graveside service will follow and be conducted by family friend, Ernie Hand of Jacksonville, FL.

Mr. Crater will be laid to rest in the family section of Bosque Bello Cemetery with military honors accorded by the East Nassau Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be: David Jones, Micah Tauscher, Zach Tauscher, Andreu Powell, Wayne Teaster and Shannon O'Conner. Honorary pallbearers will be: Virgil Davis, Harvey Carter, James Jones and John Johnson.
