1 Obit~~New Jersey Herald~~ After an illness of over one year, George B. Drake, one of the
oldest citizens of Lafayette township, passed away on Sunday morning, Jan. 29, at the advanced
age of 86 years and 23 days. Mr. Drake was born at Greensville, Sussex County, January 6, 1825
and was the son of John and Lydia Drake and was the last of a family consisting of two sons and
two daughters. His brother Andrew and two sisters, Margaret and Mary Ann, deceased resided in
Iowa. Sixty-three years ago Mr. Drake married Phoebe Jane Morris, daughter of the late Dennis
Morris, who survives him. Mrs. Drake is now 85 years old, and of remarkable good health for
one of her age. Mr. Drake is survived by one son, John Drake of Milburn, N.J. who has for some
time been residing at home taking care of his aged parents. Three years ago, Mr and Mrs. Drake
celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, of which event an elaborate account was given in the
Herald of the notable gathering of friends and relatives all over the state. Mr. and Mrs. Drake
from the time of marriage have resided in this village. He was engaged for a number of years as
pattern maker by Kays and Huston and later filled the same position under the firm of Cullver
and Huston. He was one of the most expert mill wrights possible in this state. The milling
business at one time was considered to be one of our greatest industries and he received
numerous calls from Morris, Warren and Orange Counties, as well as having all of this work in
Sussex County to attend to. This line of work gave him an extensive acquaintance all over
northern New Jersey. He was of powerful frame, and was endowed with robust health, so
continued following his trade long after passing the three score and ten mark. It was said that
there was not a mill in Sussex County which he had not repeatedly visited, and all his calls in
early life were so numerous from adjoining counties that he found it utterly impossible to answer
all calls. Mr. Drake was of a genial whole soul nature, was quite a historian, and was endowed
with a remarkable memory which he retained until death. He could minutely narrate many
incidents of early history of Sussex, Morris and Warren counties, which was of great interest.
The funeral services which were largely attended, were held Wednesday at his late residence,
and were conducted by Rev. J. L. Bilbey, pastor of the M.E. Church. Interment at the Baleville
cemetery.
