Biography

Keith Edward Snover was born on 14 July 1967 in Michigan.1 He died on 3 December 2003, at age 36, in Michigan.1
Keith Edward Snover was a Truck Driver- Nabisco Company. TRAVERSE CITY - Keith Snover's mother had the information that could have saved her son's life Wednesday - that the guns he waved at two police officers were fakes.
Linda Snover was on the phone with her son just minutes before Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies shot and killed the domestic violence suspect outside his Blair Township residence.
"What he said was that he did have the fake guns and when the police arrived he was going to go outside," said Shawn Lucius, Snover's sister, of the call between Snover and his mother.
"It was a suicide," said Lucius, who lives in Irons. "He told (his mother) good-bye, he told her that he loved her, he told her that he was going out there."
Linda Snover was too upset to talk to reporters Thursday, but called the operator from her Lake County home immediately after her son's call and asked to speak with dispatchers in Traverse City.
Her call instead was routed to Leelanau County, Lucius said.
It's not clear if or when the deputies who responded to Snover's house received the information that the guns were fake and it's also not clear whether that would have mattered, Sheriff Scott Fewins said.
Snover, 36, was shot once in the chest and died at the scene. Deputy Bradley Kirkpatrick, who fired the shot, and his partner, Deputy Erick Thorson, have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
Arenac County Sheriff James Mosciski, who was Kirkpatrick's boss before he was hired by the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department 18 months ago, called Kirkpatrick an "excellent" officer who had a clean record.
Fewins said he is reviewing 911 tapes and interviews with deputies to develop a timeline of what happened leading up to the shooting.
Even if the officers had learned the guns could be fakes, Fewins said he still believes the shooting was justified because the deputies could not have been certain the pistols were fakes.
Fewins said the encounter between Snover and deputies lasted just a couple of minutes and Snover's behavior was hostile until he pointed a replica at Kirkpatrick.
"The officers had no choice but to defend themselves," Fewins said. "You can't point something that appears to be a firearm in the direction of an officer."
Fewins said officers are trained to shoot to kill, not to shoot to disable or disarm, in order to immediately end a threat.
Investigators are also waiting for test results to determine Snover's blood alcohol level and whether he was under the influence of any other drug.
Lucius said her brother had been a drinker most of his life. About five years ago, after a 10-year relationship with a woman fell apart, Snover began to drink more and his life unraveled.
Snover lost a job as a truck driver at Nabisco and moved from Garden City to be closer to family in Irons.
"Up until about five years ago he was an absolutely wonderful human being," she said.
After moving north, Snover met the girlfriend with whom he eventually shared the mobile home where he was killed.
Prior to that, the couple lived in Manistee and in between Snover lived for a while at the Goodwill Inn in Traverse City, Lucius and others said. Most recently, he worked as a janitor at the Grand Traverse Mall.
To casual acquaintances, Snover seemed stable.
Jake DesMarais, part owner of Big D cab company, where Snover's girlfriend works as a cab driver, said Snover had been a frequent cab customer.
"He seemed to me to have his feet on the ground, he didn't seem to have a lot of personal problems. I know he drank a lot," DesMarais said.
DesMarais said Snover often used the cab service to get to and from bars and other places because he didn't have a license.
On Tuesday, a cab picked Snover up at his home in the afternoon and took him to Traverse City. He rode home in a cab at about 11:30 p.m., about two and a half hours before he died.
