4 J. Leslie 'Les' Torda, 80, formerly of Nicholson, passed away into the Lord's arms at Arbor Rose Hospice in Mesa, Ariz., on Dec. 2, 2010, and now resides in Heaven.
He was born May 13, 1930, in Highland Park, Mich., son of the late John Torda, and the late Charlotte (Kinney) Torda Anthony.
He graduated from Nicholson High School in 1948 where he lettered in basketball, baseball and volleyball and was vice president of his senior class.
Les served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He spent close to three years on the U.S.S. Wright, an aircraft carrier.
He graduated from Penn State with a B.S. in accounting. While at college, Les met his lovely wife, Anne, and they were married at the Eisenhower Chapel on the University Park campus.
Les lived in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, California, and Texas during a long work career with Bendix, I.B.M. DuPont, G.T.E. and finally at the American Airlines headquarters, where he retired after 28 years of service. He traveled many years all over the world for American on business and pleasure.
Les joined the Nicholson Methodist Church in 1941 and became affiliated with Velda Rose United Methodist Church in Mesa, Ariz., in 2003.
He was a lifetime member of Nicholson Lodge F. & A. M. and was a 32nd degree mason in the Valley of Scranton Consistory. He was also a Shriner.
Les belonged to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He moved to Leisure World in Mesa, Ariz., from Bedford, Texas, in 1994 and enjoyed many happy years there.
Les was survived by his wife, Anne; daughters: Elinor Torda of Modesto, Calif., and Pamela Nelson of Westminster, Calif.; grandsons Terry and Alex Nelson of Westminster, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law, Matilda and Dean Croasdale of Boise, Idaho; sisters-in-law: Arlene Neff of Pennsylvania and Eva Hildebrand of Phoenix, Ariz.; brother-in-law Calvin Miller of Florida; nephews: Greg Croasdale of Boise, Idaho, David Neff of Sweden and Steve Neff of Pennsylvania; nieces: Dena Collard of Boise, Idaho, Sandy Sullivan and her husband Andy of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cindy Raman and her husband Sreeni of New Jersey; and other nephews, nieces and cousins.
He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him. There was no one like him!
A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced.
