3 Charles W. “Bill” Bennett, 91 was born in East Liverpool on December 12, 1929. He was raised in the East End of East Liverpool along with his brother, Don who preceded him in death, with Christian values and principles by Clyde and Mary Leota McClellan Bennett. He met his future wife, Barbara Green Bennett, who was also raised in the same part of town as Bill when she was thirteen years old. They were friends first, and the rest was a fairytale relationship, never harsh words, or actions. They married on July 11, 1951, and spent almost 70 years as best friends and partners. Many great stories will be remembered of Bill and Barbara growing up together in East Liverpool. Bill admitted that he was not blessed with great athletic ability, but he always loved playing ball and playing in the snow with the neighborhood kids who would knock on the door and ask Barbara if Bill could come out and play. Since his mother was the church piano player, Bill developed a knack for music. He was a member of the all-boy Band while at East Liverpool High School, from which he graduated. After high school, Bill enlisted in the US Army. He served in Korea as a cook near the front lines of the conflict, serving top brass and regular troops as well. His love of music continued while in the army, playing in the military jazz trio.
Once back home from his service to his country, Bill went back to work for his dad at Bennett Plumbing, which later became known as Sanford Plumbing after his dad was severely injured on the job. Bill retired as the store manager after 30 years at Sayre Electric in East Liverpool. He loved woodworking and was a jack of all trades, an expert at all things plumbing and electrical.
Humble, kind, and gentle, Bill’s wealth was his family. They will cherish many great vacations that were within a day’s drive. Trips to Dayton, or to a local lake to rent a cabin for a week were the things that gave Bill the greatest joy.
Since Bill was diagnosed with the devastating, progressive disease that is Alzheimer’s four years ago, he and Barbara have lived at South Park Circle in Calcutta with their son and daughter-in-law, so that he could receive the attention and care required of his condition. He passed there on Friday evening, February 12, 2021. Bill leaves his wife Barbara, his children, Diane Bennett, David Bennett and his wife Michelle, Debbie Badgley and her husband Jeff, and Dan Bennett and his wife Jennifer, with whom they resided, of East Liverpool, his grandchildren, Kristen, and Michael Badgley, David M. (Brooke) Bennett, and Josh, Tyler, and Elizabeth Bennett, and his great-grandchildren, Mikenzi Deitch, and Erica Bennett.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Bill’s family has chosen to forgo traditional funeral customs and opt for cremation services. They are planning a private memorial gathering later in the year. Assistance is being provided by the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester. 2-14-2021.
