FRANK DICE, 58, IS RUN DOWN ON WAY TO SPRING OF WATER
COMPANION STANDS STILL AND ESCAPES
Another victim today is added to the long list of casualties on the Pottstown-Reading "speedway." Frank Dice, 58, of 501 Vine Street, Stowe, was killed instantly last night at 6:15 o'clock when run down near the Berks county line by an automobile driven by Chester Bechtel, of Reading, traveling passenger agent of The Reading Lines, and until several months ago was a resident of Pottstown.
The unemployed laborer was returning home with Pasquelle Jacetti, a neighbor, after spending the afternoon digging dandelion near Douglassville. According to Pasquelle, Dice and he were walking toward Stowe on the North side of the highway when Dice decided to cross the road and get a drink at a spring near the county line. Dice cut diagonally across the road and Bechtel, who was en route to Reading, swerved to the left and then when he realized he could not drive in front of the man turned back to the right and hit Dice with the left side of his machine.
After hitting Dice, Bechtel ran into the bank on the right side of the road and upset. Neither he nor his wife were hurt.
DIES INSTANTLY - Dice was thrown a distance of almost 40 feet and received a fractured skull, compound fractures of both legs, a fracture of the left arm, a fractured chest and bruises about his entire body.
Howard K. DeWees, of Phoenixville, passed the scene of the accident and took Dice to the Homeopathic hospital where attendants said he had died instantly.
Bechtel's report to the local police varied with that told by Pasquelle when the passenger agent said the two men were walking toward Douglassville and not toward Stowe as Pasquelle explained to Patrolman Paul Gumpert.
The death car driver said the men were either walking toward Douglassville or had their backs turned against traffic when Dice darted across the road. Bechtel told police he drove to the left so as to avoid hitting Pasquelle. He said he was going about 35 to 40 miles an hour at the time of the crash. (POTTSTOWN MERCURY, Wednesday, March 15, 1933.)
