Daryel Wayne Ellis, 81, of North Platte passed away at his home Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, with his family by his side.
Daryel was born March 7, 1926, to Bertha Mae Lee and Harry George Ellis on their farm near Bath, S.D. He attended and graduated from Bath High School, as did his wife, the former Eldora Jeanne Gubin, whom he married June 6, 1944 at Aberdeen, S.D.
He spent two years in the army, one in Saipan, returning home to South Dakota to grain farm and later dairy farm. When the dairy barn burnt he then began driving cattle trucks. In 1966 he went to work for Consolidated Freightways in Chicago, where they moved. After working there for five years, he was transferred to North Platte until his transfer to Lincoln in 1980.
Daryel retired in 1992 and returned to North Platte in 1997. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and watching his grandchildren play sports. While his sons were active in sports, he helped start the Junior Legion Baseball team and coached the Bath Junior Baseball team for several years.
Daryel was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church and American Legion P.R. Halligan Post No. 163 in North Platte.
Survivors include his wife Eldora of North Platte; daughters and sons Cheryl (Roger) Miller of Silt, Colo., Bill (Cindy) Ellis of Lincoln, Ted (Cleo) Ellis of Elkpoint, S.D., Peggy (Bob) Florom of Pueblo, Colo., and Merry (Tom) Sedlacek of North Platte; sister June Schliebe of Aberdeen; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and nephews Scott and Mike Schliebe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Jayde Miller and twin great-granddaughters Avery and Madison Craig.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Frank Fitch officiating. Burial will follow with military honors at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. A memorial has been established.
