Frederick (Fred) Joseph Balek was an Electrician.1 Fredrick J. "Fred" Balek, 59, of Rockwell and longtime resident of Mason City, died Tuesday (October 2, 2012) at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday (October 5, 2012) at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St. S.E. with the Rev. Rodney Allers as Celebrant. Committal services will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, (October 4, 2012) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., where a Scriptural Wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Fredrick Joseph Balek was born on November 29, 1952 in Mason City, the son of James and Vivian (Logeman) Balek. He attended St Joseph Catholic School and graduated from Newman Catholic High School amongst the class of 1971. Following high school Fred entered the Electrician apprentice program at NIACC in Mason City where he earned his electrician certification.

Fred was a gifted electrician and over the years was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #288, where he served as the Mason City area chairman for many years. He was also a member of the Apprentice program throughout Iowa. Fred proudly claimed the title of Master Electrician.

On June 17, 2012 Fred was united in marriage to his soul mate, Donita Ditsworth Roben at their home in Rockwell.

In his free time Fred enjoyed woodworking, classic cars, and collecting guns. His craftsmanship embodied perfection in everything he did. For the last few years Fred was able to assist his brother, Ron, during the harvest season as well.

He will be forever remembered as a kind and patient soul who was soft spoken and always had time to listen.

Those grateful in sharing in Fred's life is his wife, Donita Balek, Rockwell; his mother, Vivian Balek, Mason City; his in laws, Cecil and Mary Ann Ditsworth, Mason City; step children, Katie Roben, North Liberty, and Andrew Roben, Gwangju, South Korea; his siblings, Ron (Sheila) Balek, Manly, Deanna (Ed) Harris, Rockford, and Ted Balek, Mount Pleasant; brothers in law, Mark Ditsworth, Hastings, Nebraska, and Tim (Dianna) Ditsworth, Rockwell; sisters in law, Deb (Todd) Bielefeld, Mason City, and Julie (Randy) Holmes, Apple Valley, Minnesota; nieces and nephews, Jamie Balek, Amy Balek, Matthew Balek, and Jessica Balek; as well as extended family members and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, James E. Balek; paternal grandparents, Joseph M. and Jennie (Brown) Balek; and his maternal grandparents, Fred H. and Ruth L. (Godfrey) Logeman.

Graveside services will be held for Dave at 2 p.m. today, March 8, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 West, Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling officiating, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Following the graveside services the family will be gathering at the Elephant Keg, 14 S. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs, and wishes to invite all of Dave’s friends to join them.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the David F. Waychus Memorial Fund or to the Nora Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance in his honor.

David F. Waychus was born on April 4, 1950, in Mason City, to Frank and Vera Waychus; he was one of three children. Dave attended Mason City High School and graduated among the class of 1968. On June 26, 1968, Dave enlisted into the U.S. Navy where he faithfully and honorably served his country during the Vietnam conflict until his honorable discharge on Aug. 29, 1972.

Dave was employed by the Mason City Post Office and worked as a letter carrier for 31 years before his retirement.

He had a great love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting, Dave especially enjoyed traveling to Canada for fishing trips with his buddies. But Dave’s greatest love and enjoyment was spending time with his “Dearest Darling Daughter,” Lindsay.

Dave was a lifetime member of the VFW, where he held the position of Senior Vice Commander of Post 733 and was a member of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association Honor Guard. He was also a lifetime member of DAV, the American Legion HDS Post 49 of Nora Springs and was a member of the Vintage Auto Club.

The family would like to thank the men and women of the VA Health Care System for the exceptional care and comfort they provided to Dave over the many years.

Those grateful in sharing in Dave’s life are his daughter, Lindsay Hanson and her husband Ross of Waterloo; his sister, Ruth Powers of Jackson, Mo.; his brother, Doug Waychus and his wife Rosetta of Rockford; his nieces, Meghan (Thad) Landers of Shell Rock and Danielle (Chris) Patterson of Frost, Texas; one nephew, Markus (Mayra) Hamlett of Germany; and his two great-nephews, Michael Hamlett and Kayden Landers.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 North Broadway, Manly with Reverend Michael Schueller officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be held Monday, February 14, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Bride Colonial Chapel 110 East Spring Street, Manly.

Memorials may be directed to the Gerald "Jerry" Yezek Memorial in care of Tracy Van Sabben or Kristie Yezek.

Gerald Alan Yezek was born June 9, 1947, in Mason City, IA the son of Kenneth and Arvilla (Doebel) Yezek. Jerry graduated in 1966, from North Central High School, Manly. He was united in marriage to Kay McNally on July 15, 1972, to this union two daughters were born. Jerry worked for the Rock Island Rail Road, Chicago Northwestern Rail Road and retired from the Union Pacific Rail Road on July 1, 2007, after 41 years of service.

Jerry enjoyed trout fishing, hunting, bird watching and spending time with his friends; his greatest love was spending time with his family. Jerry was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly, Isaac Walton, NRA and Ducks Unlimited. He was a collector of pocket knives and enjoyed wheedling.

Jerry is survived by his daughters Tracy (Harold) Van Sabben, Carpenter, Kristie (Kyle Jensen) Yezek, Osage, grandchildren Ashlynn, Jayme and Emmalee Van Sabben, Ethen, Alyssa and Kaileigh Gerdes, Maddisen Mausenhund; siblings Dean (Ann) Yezek, Manly, June (Joe Brennan) Arickx, Osage; aunts and uncles Marilyn (Gene) Urbany, Bernadette (Vern) Smith, Vern "Buster" (Floris) Yezek, nephews Jeff Yezek and Joe (Donna) Yezek, and Brandon (Katie) Arickx; along with other relatives and friends.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents and niece Laura Marie Arickx.
