Biography

Robert Thomas Hughes, Sr., was born on 8 September 1932 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York.2 He died on 8 September 2009, at age 77, in Tampa, Hillsborough, Florida.2 He was buried in Lake Lindsay Cemetery, Brooksville, Hernando, Florida.2
US Navy-Hurricane Hunters- 21 Jan 1952- 03 Dec 1953.3,4 Robert Thomas Hughes, Sr., was educated University of Tampa/ University of Florida College of Law.3 He was awarded a BS-Education.3 He was a Policeman/ Attorney- Hughes and Rardon, P.A.3 Hughes, Robert T., 77, of Tampa, FL, passed away September 8, 2009.
He was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 8, 1932. He graduated from Erasmyhuas High School in Brooklyn. He served his country honorably in the Navy with the Hurricane Hunters from 1951 to 1953. He met the love of his life, Lillian Cason, while he was stationed in Jacksonville, FL and she was in nursing school. Upon leaving the service, he married Lillian, became a New York police officer, had three children while also attending Brooklyn College until 1958. Mandatory shift changes in the New York Police Department policy caused his college ambitions to become very difficult to obtain. He and his wife decided to move to Tampa, FL in order to continue his education and be closer to her family. He attended classes full-time during the day at the University of Tampa while also working full-time at night at the American Can Company. He graduated from the University of Tampa in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He and Lillian decided to move the family to Gainesville, FL so he could attend the University of Florida College of Law. While attending law school he worked part-time at Correy Village student housing in the maintenance department and Lillian worked full-time as a nurse at night. They both worked together sharing the responsibilities of parenthood. He graduated in the fall of 1963 and had a fourth child in January earlier that year.

Mr. Hughes began his law career working for Attorney Bill Whitaker in Winter Park, FL and later worked for Attorney George Phillips in Tampa, FL. Mr. Hughes opened his own practice and eventually formed the partnership of Hughes and Rardon, P.A. He was a member of the Florida Bar Association for 34 years. He was recognized as a Board Certified Civil Trial lawyer and a Board Certified Criminal Defense lawyer. He retired from the profession in 1997.

He will be remembered for his good nature, quick wit, and friendly personality. He loved people, was understanding and caring. He liked to make people smile and laugh with a joke or a friendly conversation. He was loyal to his friends and a great father and husband. He has told me many times that when he wakes up in the morning he would say to himself, "Look out world, here I come," and then he attacks the day trying to make a better world. He never forgot he was raised in Brooklyn, NY with nine siblings. He was also caretaker for his father in law, mother in law, and his ailing mother.

He did not tell people how to live or ever judge how they lived their life. He showed people, if they were observant, how he lived his.

He loved working with his family and friends on his cattle ranch. He loved riding his tractor, planting the fields, and watching the hay or grass grow.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Lillian Cason Hughes; children, Robert, Jr., William, Kathy (Waters), James; grandchildren, Robert III, Whitney, Pamela, Kristy, Allie, Donnie, Justin, and Melissa; great-grandchildren, Don IV, Tiffany.

Family and friends will gather for viewing and a service at Turner Funeral Home at 504 East Jefferson Street, Brooksville, FL from 1:00 to 2:00 PM Saturday, September 19, 2009 before proceeding to Lake Lindsey Cemetery for the burial service.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations payable to the Inn at University Village, Harmony Activities Program, 12250 N. 22nd Street, Tampa, FL 33612.

Many thanks to the staff in the Harmony Program at the Inn at University Village.
