2,1 He was educated University of Chicago- MBA. SAVANNAH - Richard Dean Besser, 65,of Savannah, Ga., formerly of Woodstock, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at the Memorial Health University Hospital in Georgia.
He was born Nov. 16, 1934, in Chicago, to Herman and Arlaine (Bentz) Besser.
He moved to Woodstock at an early age. He was raised in Woodstock and was a 1953 graduate of Woodstock High School. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Armed Services.
After obtaining his bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois and his MBA from the University of Chicago, he started his career with Inland Steel Co. He went on to become president and chief executive officer of a number of companies, including Warner and Swasey, Schuler Inc.; Seaco Inc. and Chicago Pneumatic Tool Co. As an industry leader, he was called upon to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives' ways and Means Committee several times. His leadership abilities also led to many accomplishments in civic and philanthropic activities.
In 1998, he traveled to Bulgaria with Citizens of the Democratic Corps, where he gave executive assistance to struggling corporate enterprises in Eastern Europe. Although semi-retired, he was an active consultant with Full Circle Investment Inc. and was a director of several of its companies.
Mr. Besser is survived by his wife, Patricia of Savannah; his children, Mark Besser of Savannah and Tamara (Paul) Besser Gilbert of Chicago; two grandchildren, Olivia and Irene Gilbert of Chicago; a sister, Roxann Turner of Elgin; his mother of Elgin; his father-in-law, William P. Rimer of Merrillville, Ind.; a brother-in-law, William E. (Janice) Rimer of Crown Point, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Bonnie (Rich) Bekelya of Crown Point; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8; p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, at the Schneider-Leucht-Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home in Woodstock. The funeral will be at 11 a.m Saturday, Feb. 19, at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the McHenry County Memorial Park Cemetery in Woodstock.
A memorial service will be conducted in Savannah at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
