STANFORD EUGENE SOVOCOOL, 83, died on Wednesday, December 8, 1999, in Houston, Texas. Mr. Sovocool valued family, friends, church, music, laughter and joy. Surviving him are his loving wife of 42 years, Yvonne Sovocool; daughters, Carol A. Vigna and Shirley H. Horn; granddaughters, Leslie Vigna, Prudence Horn and Renee' Horn. Visitation with the family present will be held from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., on Friday December 10, 1999 at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Saturday in the Waltrip Chapel with Rev. Ed Hogan and Rev. A. M. Stone officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Garden of Memories.

Mary was born June 10, 1897, in Oneonta, the daughter of James and Fanny (Harkness) Downie.

Mary married Lewis Sovocool on June 30, 1927, in East Lansing, Mich. They were married for 52 years until his death on June 2, 1980.

Mary graduated from the Oneonta Normal School in 1917 with a degree in teaching and subsequently taught first grade in St. Johnsville, Cleveland and Ithaca.

Mary and her husband purchased the Downie family farm on Upper East Street in 1946, and Mary continued to live there until 1990.

She was the oldest member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta, having been baptized and received into church membership on May 17, 1914.

Mary is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wilbur and Louise Sovocool of LeRoy; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Eric Gardell of Wappinger Falls; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by a son, James Sovocool; a granddaughter, Patricia Sovocool; three sisters, Dorothy Brown, Anna Russell and Ethel Glynn; and three brothers, John Downie, J. Gordon Downie and the Rev. Herbert Downie.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta, with the pastor of her church, the Rev. C. Spencer VanGulick, officiating. Mary will be placed in the Bookhout private vault to await burial in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, from 7 to 9, at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the memorial fund at First United Presbyterian Church, 381 Main St., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Funeral arrangements are by the Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta and Otego.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, G. Wayne Sovocool; and two grandchildren, Kent A. and Mark E. Sovocool, all of Henderson, Nev.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Maurer Funeral Home, Moyers Corners Chapel, 3541 Route 31, Baldwinsville. The Rev. Ronald Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Plains Cemetery, Clay.

Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Clay.
