L. JAY SOVOCOOL, age 89, of 579 Auburn Road, Groton, NY (Town of Lansing) died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004 at his residence of natural causes. L Jay was born March 11, 1915 at Groton a son of the late Perry and Emily Sobers Sovocool. He was a resident of Groton until 1970 when he and his wife, the former Ruth Newlon, relocated to Lansing. He was employed for 41 years at Smith Corona as an automatic screw machine operator. L Jay was a member of the Groton Fire Department and Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include Ruth, his wife of 66 years and his daughters, Rosalee Joan Devlen of Groton, Kathleen Rae (Dorrel) Harrison of Scottsburg, IN, Janice S. (Paul) Monagan of Fort Myers, FL; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Eva Sovocool Bacon of Groton; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers: Emmett, Ellard, Raymond, and Henry and his sisters, Leona Wood and Marian Zaller.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Friday, Dec. 31, 2004 at the Perkins Funeral Home with Rev. David Braid officiating. Burial, delayed until spring, will be in Willow Glen Cemetery, Dryden. Friends are invited to call Friday from 11 AM to 1 PM at the funeral home, 55 West Main St., Dryden. Those wishing to remember Mr. Sovocool are asked to consider memorials to the Groton Fire Department, Cortland St., Groton, NY 13073 or The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 120 Wall Street, 19th Floor, New York, NY 10005.
Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY assisted the family.
