Stroop, George W.
Beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. George passed away peacefully at home October 12, 2003. Born in Oak Harbor WA on April 29, 1923, George later moved to California with his family, where he attended Emerson Jr. High, University High School and UCLA. During WWII George became a Naval Pilot, and while training in Cocoa Beach, FL, married his true love Gloria Horsman, from Santa Monica, on May 9, 1945. Following the War, George became a salesman at Santa Monica Ford. In 1951 he contracted polio and spent a year in an iron lung. After a long and brave rehabilitation, and the unflagging devotion of his wife Gloria, George returned to work for a 50 year career as a Sales and Fleet manager at Santa Monica Ford. George was an early member of the Brentwood Optimist Club, and later the Palisades Optimists. George loved: collecting cars; trout fishing; deep sea fishing; building and flying radio controlled gliders with his grandson; attending his granddaughter's volleyball matches and his grandson's baseball games; and most recently passing his love of flying down to his three great grandsons. George is survived by his wife Gloria, daughter Joyce Solodovnikov (Alex) of Pacific Palisades, granddaughter Cindy Hann (Robert) of Santa Barbara, grandson Geoffrey Solodovnikov (Bridget) of Lompoc, and great grandchildren Ethan, Spencer, Lily, Brendan, and Anabella, and sisters Helen Witty, Pat Boulmentis and Mary Donkin. George's endless love and devotion to his family can never be replaced. His entire family will treasure him always. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 PM on Sunday, November 2nd, at Buerge Chapel in Pacific Palisades. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the March of Dimes for their generosity to victims during the Polio epidemic.
