John Clyde Swartzwelder was born on 1 April 1911 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts.1,2,3 He died on 17 June 2002, at age 91, in Metairie, Jefferson, Louisiana.2 He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery( Section 8-I, Row 17, Site 2), Arlington, Arlington, Virginia.4
John Clyde Swartzwelder was a Medical School Teacher- Louisana State University Medical Center.5 U.S. Army.4 He was educated Tulane University.3 He was awarded a Masters-Helminthology/ Masters-Protozoology.3 J. "Clyde" Swartzwelder ’33, professor emeritus and a retired head of the department of Tropical Medicine and Medical Parasitology at Louisiana State University Medical Center, died Monday at his home. He was 91.

Dr. Swartzwelder was born in Lynn, Mass., and lived in Metairie [Louisiana] for the past 68 years. Dr. Swartzwelder had a bachelor’s degree in entomology from the University of Massachusetts, a master’s degree in helminthology from Tulane University and a doctorate in protozoology from Tulane University, and he was certified by the American Board of Microbiology. His major research interests were ambiasis, Chagas’ disease, anthelmintics, medical education and research training in tropical medicine. After a four-year stint as an assistant in medical parasitology at Tulane University’s School of Medicine, Dr. Swartzwelder joined the staff of LSU Medical School as an instructor in 1937. He rose to the rank of assistant professor while still working as a scientist at Charity Hospital. He joined the Army during World War II and was a parasitologist and malariologist in the South Pacific. He was chief of the field survey branch of the tropical disease control division in the office of the Surgeon General and achieved the rank of major.

Dr. Swartzwelder returned to LSU in 1946. He was named a professor of medical parasitology in 1950. In 1958, he was named education director of LSU’s Inter-american Training Program in Tropical Medicine. He was named head of LSU’s Department of Tropical Medicine and Medical Parasitology in 1960. He juggled his duties at the medical school with his work at LSU-ITPTM; he participated in training the staff of about 70 percent of the medical schools in the United States, as well as medical officers in the Armed Forces and Peace Corps doctors. He was also key to developing LSU’s International Center for Medical Research and Training in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Dr. Swartzwelder retired in 1975. He was named professor emeritus that year, a title he held until his death. He was an honorary foreign member of "Carlos Finley" Society and the Sociedad Mexicana de Parasitologia. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi and was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award from the LSU Alumni. He was the author or co-author of almost 140 scientific publications from 1934 to 1975, including one of the leading textbooks on tropical medicine.

LACONIA - Priscilla E. Swartzwelder, 88, of 435 Union Avenue died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Ledgeview, Taylor Community, following a short illness.

Mrs. Swartzwelder was the widow of William W. Swartzwelder who died in 1979.

Born Oct. 6, 1918, in Peabody, Mass., daughter of Edward M. and Maude (Barrett) Elder, she attended schools in Peabody and Lynn, Mass. She graduated from Lynn English High School, Northfield School for Girls and Simmons College.

Mrs. Swartzwelder and her late husband were married on Dec. 8, 1939. They resided in Lynn, Mass., Hampton Beach, Laconia and Gilford.

She assisted her late husband in his restaurants in Boston, Mass. and Hampton Beach. While in Laconia, she worked at Sawyers Jewelry. She also worked at Stafford Oil and Howard Oil, retiring in 1983.

Mrs. Swartzwelder was a member of the Gilford Community Church.

She was also a member of the 50 Plus Club in Meredith and the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Swartzwelder was artistic, talented and creative. She enjoyed doing needle point and knitting. She taught knitting for the CAP Program in Meredith and all our friends. She was an avid reader and scrabble player.

Mrs. Swartzwelder delighted in watching her children grow up on the slopes of Gunstock.

She leaves son William M. Swartzwelder and his wife, Marie, of Broadbrook, Conn.; daughters Marlis Clark and her husband, Richard, of Clearfield, Utah, Gretchen Shortway of Laconia, and Heidi Edgar and her husband, Michael, of Meredith; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Louise Grant of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband of 40 years, William W. Swartzwelder, she was predeceased by one brother and two sisters.

The family would like to thank those who helped care for their mother, especially the nursing staff at the Taylor Home Community Assisted Living and Congregate Living Center.

There will be no calling hours.

A private graveside service will be held at the family lot in McCoy Cemetery, Gilford.

Carl Lewis Kinney, 73, of Benton, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, in an Etowah hospital.
He retired as a mechanic from Sarasota County, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvah and Vivian Marshall Kinney; and son, Christopher Kinney.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Kinney of Benton; children: Lori Woods of Benton and Robert Kinney of Bradenton, Fla.; one grandson; and sister, Nancy Bush of Morristown.
