Lucine Wallingford, 85, formerly of Fort Madison, died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at her daughter's home in Clinton.
Born July 2, 1923, on the family farm in Houghton, she was the daughter of William J. and Matilda Gertrude Hellweg Holtkamp. On July 21, 1941, she married George C. Wallingford in Montrose. He died in 1994.
Mrs. Wallingford and her husband operated the Welpton Farm south of Salem from 1940 to 1960. She also operated a beauty shop in Montrose, Salem and Hillsboro from 1940 until she moved to Fort Madison in 1967. She was then employed as a nurse's assistant at Sacred Heart Hospital from 1967 until her retirement in 1985.
She attended grade school and high school at St. John's School in Houghton and was a 1940 graduate of Burlington Beauty School. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Sacred Heart Rosary Society, the Sacred Heart Hospital Retirees, Hillsboro Alpha Club and also was a Henry County 4-H Club Leader. She enjoyed traveling to see her family, attending family parties and making unique and special gifts for each occasion.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Genck of Western Springs, Ill., Helen Jennings of Clinton, and Connie Stevens of Sussex, N.J.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Irma Gabel and Betty Ball, both of Donnellson; one brother, Raymond Holtkamp of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two infant granddaughters, four brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory in Donnellson, with family receiving friends from 4 to 7 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Mass of Christian burial for Mrs. Wallingford will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Sacred Heart Church in Fort Madison, with the Rev. Greg Steckel officiating. Burial will be in Vale Cemetery in Bonaparte.
