CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Rev. Edward Winthrop Battin, 82, of Penn Hall, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at the nursing center. Born June 20, 1925, in Collingswood, N.J., he was the son of the late Henry W. and Margaret Downing Battin.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Cope Battin, in 2002. They were married Nov. 24, 1951.
He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1948 and his Master of Divinity degree from the General Theological Seminary in New York City. He was ordained deacon in May 1951 and priest in December 1951. He served as vicar of St. John's Church, Concordville, from 1951 to 1954, and as rector from 1954 until his retirement in 1992. While serving at St. John's, he and his wife founded the St. John's Episcopal Church Nursery School. He currently was attending St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Shippensburg, Pa. He served as dean of the Brandywine Deanery, and was a founding board member of The Concept School in Westtown, Pa.
He is survived by two children, Kimberly J. Battin of Chambersburg, and Christopher W. Battin of Bowling Green, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Battin.
A Requiem Eucharist and the Burial Office will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, Glen Mills, Pa. Bishop Allen L. Bartlett Jr., the Rev. John Sorensen and the Rev. Ted Babcock will officiate. Burial will be in St. John's Graveyard. A reception in the parish hall will follow.
