1 Keith A. Brendler, 55, of Toms River, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014, at University Hospital in Newark. Born in Trenton, he was raised in Pennington, and lived in Waretown and Seaside Heights before settling in Toms River more than 30 years ago. He was a 1977 graduate of Hopewell Valley Central High School, and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge in 1984. He was a longtime employee of AF Cafiero Machinery Co., and for the past 19 years worked at Monmouth Rubber and Plastics in Long Branch.
Keith was devoted to his faith and committed to helping those in need. As Lay Leader of the Island Heights United Methodist Church, he served on numerous committees, was a leader of the IHUMC Youth Group, and assisted with the Toms River First United Methodist Church Youth Group. He was also a member of the Emmaus Community.
Keith shared his love of soccer with children in the Jersey Shore area by coaching several clubs and dedicating much of his time to the Tops Soccer Outreach Program. He was an avid photographer, carpenter, hockey player and NJ Devils fan, and was very proud of his distinguished goatee.
He was predeceased by his father, Arthur, his mother, Helen Schoeneberg Brendler Hirst, and his stepfather, Conrad Hirst. He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Joann (Sarullo) Brendler, and their children, Airman Kristian Brendler, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, and Mikaila Brendler, a recent graduate of Toms River High School South. He is also survived by siblings Clifford Brendler and his wife Deborah, Marlene (Brendler) Lewis, Mary Ellen (Hirst) Devlin and her husband Martin, and Martha (Hirst) Devlin and her husband James; sisters-in-law, Marie (Sarullo) Leone and her husband Thomas, and Nancy (Sarullo) Quinn and her husband Donald; 17 devoted nieces and nephews; and 2 fiercely loyal cats.
A memorial service will be at the Island Heights United Methodist Church, 111 Ocean Ave., Island Heights, NJ.
