5 NORTH MANKATO - Dorothy Ann Barrett, age 73, of North Mankato, died Saturday, December 18, 2010.
Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Messiah Lutheran Church, North Mankato. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, January 7, 2010 at North Mankato Mortuary - NORTHVIEW. Visitation will continue one hour before service at church on Saturday. Burial will be in Shady Oak Lake Cemetery, Minnetonka, MN in the spring. Memorials may be given to Mankato Elks #225 Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 154, Mankato, MN, where Dorothy enjoyed volunteering.
Dorothy was born November 28, 1937, to Richard and Evelyn (Svec) Holasek in Hopkins. She graduated valedictorian from Eden Prairie High School in 1955. She attended Hamline University and graduated from American University in Washington D.C. after marrying Robert Barrett. Dorothy later attained her Masters degree and was employed by the Mankato Public Schools as a teacher of various subjects from 1969 until her retirement in 1999. She was a long time member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Minnesota Valley Sweet Adelines - Mankato, the Red Hat Society, Wild West Women, and Book Club. Dorothy embraced life and enjoyed singing, listening to music, traveling, reading, teaching, architecture, theater, politics, designing and building her retirement home, spending time with her grandchildren, and being a wonderful mother.
Dorothy is survived by her loving family including two children, Geoff Barrett of Brooklyn, New York and Anne (Wade) DeArmond of Franklin, WI; two grandchildren, Marin and Everett DeArmond; sister, Janet (Arthur) Worrall of Ft. Collins, CO; niece, Beth ( David) Newsom, child Lori; nephews, Timothy (Tamara) Worrall, children Madeleine and Zoe; and Thomas (Christina) Worrall, child Luke. Grandma Dottie, as she loved being called, treasured all the moments she spent with her family and more recently with her grandchildren and niece and nephew's children. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and special friend, Bill Brown.
