Ernest was born Nov. 8, 1940, in Rock Island, a son of George and Dorothy Beintema Berhenke. He married Felva Pauline "Polly" Taylor on March 19, 1960, in Davenport. Ernest worked for Rock Island Millwork for eight years, then went to work at Williams & White Co., Moline, retiring in 2003 after 39 years of service.

Mr. Berhenke was a member of Community Baptist Church, Andalusia. He loved his family, old cars and working on cars, traveling, his grandchildren and great-grandbabies.

She was a former member of Church of the Nazarene in Coal Valley. She enjoyed writing religious poems and songs. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters, Geraldine (Jeff) Crisel, Moline, Mary Hughes, Mesa, Ariz., Karen (Bob) Miller, East Moline; sons, Gerald Berhenke Jr., Silvis, Larry Berhenke, Moline; sister, Toni (Dale) Darr, East Moline; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald Sr.; and brother, Charles Smith.
