Born on Aug,12, 1901, on the family farm in Somerset, he was the son of the late Matthew and Cassie Skillman Suydam. He lived his entire life on the farm. He graduated from George School in Newtown, Pa. He married the former Eunice Morgan, a nurse at Middlesex General Hospital in New Brunswick, on March 2, 1929.
A lifelong farmer, he bred and raised purebred Brown Swiss dairy cattle and exhibited them from coast to coast. In 1958 and 1959, Rutgers University honored him as the best grass pastureland grower in New Jersey. In 1960, his Brown Swiss herd captured the national milk production championship. It brought that title to New Jersey, taking it out of Wisconsin for the first time in 20 years. In 1983, he received the Century Farm Award from the New Jersey Agricultural Society. He was a member of Six Mile Run Reformed Church in Franklin Park, where he served as a deacon and elder. A prominant duplicate tournament bridge player, he was named to the U.S. Olympic Team in 1940. Taking up trapshooting at 55, it became a passion that led to a plethora of trophies and championships. At the age of 90, he won the North American Senior Veterans Championship and had more registered shots than any other amateur shooter.
His wife, Eunice Morgan Suydam, died last year. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Ann Suydam Klapper, who died in 1973. Surviving are a son, Abram J. Suydam Jr. of Somerset; five grandchildren, Jennifer Klapper of Philadelphia, Adarla McLaughlin of Haverhill, Mass., and Robin Suydam, Sally Suydam amd Ryck Suydam, all of Somerset; and four great-grandchildren, Matthew Suydam, Jenna Suydam, J. Paul Suydam and Lucas Suydam, all of Somerset.
Private services were held Monday, Nov. 5, at the Suydam family farm. Burial was at Elmridge Cemetery, North Brunswick. Arrangements were under the direction of Quakenboss Funeral Home, New Brunswick.
