Joseph Carmella, 61, of East Stroudsburg, died Saturday in his home. He was the husband of Virginia (Dailey) Carmella.
He was a baseball and softball umpire for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athlectic Association (PIAA) for more than 30 years. This past srping, the PIAA renamed two umpire chapters in his honor, Joe Carmell/Northeast Pennyslvania Baseball and Joe Carmella/Ponoco Area Softball.
He was selected to work the Pennsylvania Conference softball championships for seven straight years in the 1980s and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II regional playoff games in softball. He also was umpire for NCAA Division II Regional softball playoff games three times.
Born in East Stroudsburg, he was a son of the late Thomas and Marie (Mongona) Carmella Sr.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, East Stroudsburg.
Survivors: Wife; daughter, Tanya Carmella-Beers; sister, Sadie Kishbaugh, and a brother, Thomas Jr., all of East Stroudsburg.
