Mrs. Catherine E. Avery, 59, of 54 Borough St., East Stroudsburg, died Friday at 11:55 p.m. in the General Hospital of Monroe County.

She was born in Bushkill, the daughter of the late Harry and Susie Bartow Litts.

Mrs. Avery was a resident of Monroe County most of her life and a member of the East Stroudsburg Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Mrs. Davis Sunday School of the church, the Stroudsburg chapter 1004 Women of the Moose, and the Ladies Independence Order of Reindeer.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel L. Avery at home; three daughters, Mrs. Nettie Smith of East Stroudsburg, Mrs. Virginia Carmella of East Stroudsburg, and Mrs. Susie Umphrey of Stroudsburg RD 1; two brothers, James and Charles Litts of East Stroudsburg; a sister, Mrs. Eliza Whitmore of East Stroudsburg, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Lanterman Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold C. Eaton officiating.

Burial will be in the Sand Hill Cemetery, Bushkill.

Frienda and relatives may call at the home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Lady Reindeer wil hold services at the home Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Born on January 27, 1933 in Easton, she was a daughter of the late James and Virginia (Counterman) Litts and lived in Monroe County for most of her life.

She was a secretary at East Stroudsburg University until retiring in 1993 after twenty five years of service.

Carolyn liked playing B-I-N-G-O, doing crossword puzzles and going shopping. She also loved family get-togethers and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband she is survived by four children, Joanne Kensinger of Unityville, twins Debra Moore and her husband Paul of Mesa, AZ and David Smallacombe and his wife Nancie of Edisto Island, SC and Steven Smallacombe and his wife Kimberly of Long Pond; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Ernestine Schaefer (widow of Marcus) of Scotrun; a brother, George Litts and his wife Marilyn of Stroudsburg and several nieces and nephews.
