She was a teacher in the Phillipsburg School District for 40 years until retiring in 1977.

Born in Phillipsburg, she was a daughter of the late Henry A. and Mary E. (Leonard) Shafer.

She was a 1928 graduate of Montcliar State College.

She held various offices in New Jersey and Phillipsburg education associations, the Warren County and retired teachers association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma honor society.

Surviving is a sister, Magdelen Rooney of Phillipsburg.
